The Cat Nats Report: Thank You, Kate
Posted by Jon Cruz in the NCFL 2005 category
MILWAUKEE, WI - With round two over, some students and coaches are attempting to get in a brief lunch prior to the start of the first power-paired round. As noted, the use of codes–for both student and judges–makes posting schedules right now rather meaningless. However, Kate Hoffmire has helped compile codes and their corresponding names to significantly augment the names provided directly to us, so VBD should be able to have a comprehensive list of names to go with the codes that will be posted tonight when outround participants are announced.

The Cat Nats Report: Activate Decoder Rings
Posted by Jon Cruz in the NCFL 2005 categoryMILWAUKEE, WI - As at Nationals, and at many state tournaments, the NCFL utilizes a code system on its schematics. Clearly, this will make reporting pairings round-by-round somewhat difficult; the same, of course, is true about outrounds. In the past, both at Nationals and at the NCFL, many attending debaters have shared their codes here on Victory Briefs Daily to help assist, so, if you’re interested in sharing yours, feel free to do so.

The Cat Nats Report: Touchdown in Milwaukee
Posted by Jon Cruz in the NCFL 2005 categoryMILWAUKEE, WI - It’s 9:25 AM CST, and I’m biding my time in Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Airport. As Bronx Science is not competing in LD at this year’s tournament, your ever-faithful VBD main content provider and senior correspondent has accepted the judging job generously offered by Dulles High School, so I’m an adopted Texan for the weekend. My unnaturally early flight seemed largely devoid of forensics personalities, but upon arrival, I was quickly reminded as to why so many high schoolers, college students, teachers, and parents were converging upon the Badger State this weekend: extemp files and policy tubs galore, the most hardcore of speechies practicing their pieces with their faces to walls, and a number of members of the LD community scattered about. Some of the faces I already knew–Dario Camara, Laurie Johnson, and past champion Nina Thanawala made for a Ridge triumverate at baggage claim–and others I did not, but, it seems, thanks to a number of lovely mug shots in VB Photos, a number of readers from states across the country recognized me, and made sure to introduce themselves. As things get started, join me for a brief overview of the tournament.
