Claire Daviss Wins TFA State
EL PASO, Tex. — Hanks High School played host to the 2010 Texas Forensic Association State Meet, at which 154 Lincoln-Douglas debaters vied for the state title. The final round featured Northland Christian School’s Josh Roberts on the affirmative and Winston Churchill High School’s Claire Daviss on the negative. Greg McGee, Andrew Cockroft, and Jennifer Miller adjudicated.
On a 2-1 decision, Claire was crowned this year’s TFA State Champion. (Claire also won TFA State in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking.) Congratulations to both debaters!
Claire is coached by Kandi King; Josh is coached by Kevin Roberts, Sam Duby and Daniel Moerner.
In the final round, McGee affirmed, while Cockroft and Miller negated.

Somewhat tangential, but I was curious just how far El Paso is from Dallas—Google Maps says it takes 10 hours and 34 minutes to make that drive, the exact same estimate for driving from Dallas to Nashville. Did squads from the Dallas area drive to TFA State? How ’bout from Houston (11 hours, 39 minutes)? Or Austin (9 hours, 22 minutes)? Or did squads fly to El Paso International Airport?
I’m fascinated by the geography of Texas. Good luck to everyone at TFA State!

There is really a mix. Some teams travel with their entire school district on charter busses, some teams fly.
What really doesn’t make sense is that a roundtrip Greyhound ticket from Houston to El Paso is $170, but a Southwest airlines ticket is $200. I think many of the people driving to El Paso would agree that $30 is worth saving 30 hours of time that would have been spent traveling on a bus.
interesting fact: El Paso is the only texas city not in the central time zone

Re: #5
That’s really interesting. It’s hard for someone not in Texas to imagine having to get on an airplane to get to another city in same state. Houston is 746 miles from El Paso; by comparison, that’s the same distance from Philadelphia to Atlanta.
I love Texas.

Ramin is an exceptionally hardworking kid and I am very proud of him for going 3-1 at this tournament so early on in his debate career. The fact that he might break at TFA state at this early stage in his career is mind-boggling. I expect everyone judging at this tournament to pick him up.

tx size sucks; it really adversely affects the judging situation when the tournament is held in deep south or west texas – most non-full time coach judges-coach people are in the 4 major cities, and don’t want to deal with traveling great distances for whatever reason.

i’ve heard students from about every school I’ve intereacted with this weekend talk of judges not flowing, texting during speeches, not giving RFDs in outrounds, and otherwise refusing to behave as if they have obligations to the students to evaluate rounds respectfully, honestly, and with an open-mind . . . wtf? and what are we going to do about it?

And yeah this tournament had some awful judging. The fact that it was in El Paso was definitely a deterrent for good judges. El Paso is not only incredibly far away from everything else in Texas but its arguably the worst place Ive ever been, period. hah. @ Kris:
“anyone else think this is the worst judged TFA State they’ve ever attended?”
- Yes
“what are we going to do about it?”
- Not schedule TFA State in El Paso? I mean, it’s already bad enough having to drive 9 hours. It’s weird though, if I remember the judging from 2006 was really good, and that tournament was basically in Mexico.
In any case, congrats to everyone who did well.
Special congrats go to Tyler Sullivan of Salado. I’m officially declaring him the best ever debater to come from Salado named Tyler.

Great showing by Churchill. Congratulations not only to the competitors, but also Mrs. King and the coaching staff.
Finally, BIG BIG congrats to friend and teammate Jrob. A finalist at TFA state as a junior is phenomenal. Next year is the year man. You’re incredibly talented and hardworking. I can’t wait to see the results of our amazing team next year!

TFA is what it has been in the past…a tough tournament. In the days before MJP the reality was the judge (whoever they may be) was god (thank you The Great Debaters). Many kids who “should have cleared” didn’t and that sucks. octafinal
For those of you that were not there – some of the judging was appalling by any imaginable standard. texting during an round is unacceptable by any standard.
However, there were some truly special performances that overcame all the obstacles. Congrats Claire! DX and LD…is this the 1990’s??? I know you made your coaches proud. I truly believe this was the best final round there has been in a long time and I was glad I got to see it.
Josh persuasive is an understatement
Nick – you defined good standards debate for the year in quarters
Sam – never saw you and wish I had seen more this year. You have a bright future ahead.
Team Hockaday – Megha: top speaker – I told you so! 11 out of 13 with winning records is something to be proud of. Keep it up kiddos!

Josh way to continue to wreck anywhere we go. I cant even imagine what next year is going to be like for you. This is only the beginning to what will be one of the best years for any debater.
Finally, congrats to Elizabeth and Sarah for going 3-2 and just not clearing on speaks.

First and most importantly, congratulations to Claire, that is quite frankly the shit. Shout out to JMon and Patrick, my brothers.
And yeah, I had a judge ask me the resolution before the round, and others quite simply not be invested in, or familiar with, the activity. I do realize that it is important to incorporate various perspectives on debate, but I really didn’t feel that was the case here. I felt as if there was a dissymmetry and imbalance between the debaters investment in the activity (these were the kids that worked all year for this tournament and put in endless hours journeying in it) and (obviously with exceptions) the judges’ investment in the activity and true understanding of what this activity and tournament meant to most, if not all, the debaters in it. Maybe I say that out of frustration, but it felt very unfair to work so hard and have my tournament experience (and more or less my debate experience) be cut off by judges whom I felt really hadn’t the level of familiarity with the event to understand what I was trying to communicate.

In regards to judging and upping the quality,
TFA state should have dealt with their MPJ ahead of time
I was told that many people preffed me in LD yet I was removed from the pool to judge 9 CX rounds
(not that I’m complaining at all :P)
A lot of preference was given to CX (judges.room quality) and not LD. A lot needs to be done in the community in order to get that same respect.
however they should have been more clear on WHO would judge WHAT event
Also there were some no shows which led alot of people to get their 2/3s
Those judges with less than respectful behavior should have been reported to tab so that their contract would have been nullified and or they would have lost their judge bond.
One example is all I think it would take to fix a lot of these issues.
Lastly you get the issue of (some not all) Coaches (who have at least some skill at the event who prefer to judge IEs cause they will get out faster
Thanks to all the coaches who judged debate rounds because without them the pool would have been 100% worse

Claire’s weekend was easily one of the most impressive showings I’ve ever seen at TFA. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person or a more dedicated head coach. Claire and Kandi both deserved such a nice ending.
I also wanted to congratulate Josh Roberts as he continues to put together an amazing junior year as well as Cole Oliver and Jared Woods on their second straight year of breaking at TFA state. Including Jared Woods who was in quarters as a sophomore last year, next year’s edition of TFA state will return 5 students who have been in at least the quarters.
On a sidenote, the way speaker points are given out in Texas needs to be reexamined.
33/154 at TFA averaged 29+ H/L
104/154 at TFA averaged 28+ H/L
I believe there were 2 students who had 4 out of 5 30s and a handful with 3 30s. Given the way speaker points seem to be awarded in Texas, I’m not so convinced they are serving any real purpose as meaningful differentiators amongst those with the same record.
