Dan Chen is New Jersey State Champion

Ridge Closes Out J.V.; Yang Yi Wins Novice Title

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. — The very best competition from across the Garden State converged on Ridge High School to compete at this weekend’s New Jersey Forensic League State Championships. The top eight varsity Lincoln-Douglas debaters advanced into the elimination rounds, until only one remained: state champion Whippany Park High School’s Dan Chen, who bested Millburn High School’s Michael Hassin on a 2-1 decision in finals. Congratulations to both!

Dan is coached by Melissa Casciano; Michael is coached by Michael Paul, Avi Jayaraman, and Dan Jennis.

Ridge High School’s Liz Pires and Alex Liao closed out the junior varsity tournament, sharing the J.V. state championship. Congratulations to both teammates!

Liz and Alex are coached by Dave Yastremski and Charlie Furman.

In the final round of the novice tournament, Millburn High School’s Yang Yi defeated Montville High School’s Deep Dheri to take the championship. Congratulations to both finalists!

Yang is coached by Michael Paul and Christian Tarsney; Deep is coached by Mary Gormley.

    I hit Mikey as a 3-1 (he’s 4-0), so I was a pull up.

    Mikey and Hailey are 5-0.

    Alexa and I are 3-2 (I should be last seed).

    Muta, Sohum, Patrick, and Dan are all 4-1.

    Mikey was sidelocked affirmative going into this round.

    Nice job Dan. Whippany Park has it’s first state champion in over 5 years. Nice way to cap off a solid season. Now let’s see a qual to Nats for the hell of it.

    Big congrats to Yang on taking novice! That was the payoff of a ton of work in the weeks leading up to the tournament, and was very well-deserved.
