Have they released the bracket? From speaks I feel like the order Shane listed the byes is the top seven seeds.
Posted from: 66.240.48.106
March 7th, 2010 00:46
Yeah, the byes are in order, and I’m pretty sure the rest of the pairings are too.
Posted from: 66.240.48.106
March 7th, 2010 00:52
BTW, the novice semis is a breakout from the varsity bracket, which is an idea I really like and wish more tournaments would adopt. I got to see two of the novice semifinalists in prelims, Meadows EH and Blake JN, and was hugely impressed by both of them–should be some good rounds in that bracket.

will the doubles round be tonight or tomorrow?
Posted from: 66.240.48.106
March 7th, 2010 01:00
@ Christian – The rest of the pairing is not in order. The bracket will be released after doubles. This was done so that debate judges of the novice breakout (debaters with byes) are not at uneven (dis)advantages in terms of scouting as some have opponents in flights they cannot watch while others can.
Also, +1 to the idea of the novice breakout. It’s a great idea, especially later in the season. And, thanks to the six debaters (6 of the top 7 seeds) for taking time to help out the younger members of our community – it’s very cool.

Re 27.
It would be an incredible coincidence if that pairing in 22 wasn’t the bracket in order. Seeds 1-13 are in order on that pairing.

While Bronx Science could not be at Harker this year — we enjoyed our time out there two years ago — I do want to chime in to say that, when logistically feasible, I agree that novice breakouts are AWESOME. It’s a great way for younger debaters to get the important experience of facing more seasoned competition while also getting the chance at individual recognition that is particularly important when one’s parents are still determining if debate is something in which it is worth investing.

Justin lost to Eric on a 3-0. Before all the congrats for everyone else come in, I just want to take a second and congratulate Justin. You’re awesome. Debate may not have gone the way you wanted it too, but you worked so hard and are so smart and you should be really proud of yourself. What you managed to do without a coach is just straight up impressive, and I really hope you stick around next year. Hanging out with you was so much fun, and next year it won’t be the same.
I really wish you could’ve qualled, but it doesn’t matter. I think you are still one of the smartest debaters I’ve ever met. I remember last year at fullerton watching one of your rounds and thinking, shit this kid is really smart.
I hope you stick around in this activity and coach some kid who was in your position, because jesus that kid would be one hell of a debater.

I definitely want to echo post 43. I roomed with Justin at VBI this past summer, where he was not only an incredible debater but also an incredible person. I learned so much from Justin about debate, and he was kind enough to house me at VBT this year. What he has done on the circuit without a coach has been amazing, and it’s awesome to think about what he could do as a coach for another debater in his position. I really hope the at-large situation works out, and Justin will be able to have his deserved shot at the TOC.

I want to congratulate Justin and Paras for getting as far as they did. They’re both fantastic debaters and I can think of no one I was more hoping would bid. They’re also both really cool and I have never seen them hesitate in the slightest to help someone out when they could. I’m not quite clear on the at-large process, but if anyone who has any influence on that decision reads this thread, I’m positive they would be able to understand that Justin is one of the most worthy candidates for an at-large.
