That being said, the quality of the tournament this year was FAR superior to last year in terms of judging, and community prefs did nothing but help that even more. It’s great to see that such a big tournament which was notorious for poor judging in the past has turned it all around in one year. I am looking forward to returning next year, and at the rate things are going I can only imagine how fun and educational it will be.

And, back to LD:

Congratulations to Perry and his coaches — Anjan, Todd, Elyse, Tanya — for the big win. And, as I noted on the other article, Walt Whitman’s TENTH qualifier is one for the history books. The program’s domination this season is a testament to a whole lot of hard work by a whole lot of kids.

Congratulations to Jake and his coaches — Bietz, PDVE, and Tara — for beating out a lot of East Coast competition on the Big Weekend. Intense stuff.

And finally, YAY to Bobby Esnard for his third bid to the TOC, and YAY to Matt Ross for a solid performance in the Harvard Round Robin. The “4-2 screw” at Harvard is painful.

Finally:

Thanks to Liz Rogers Brannen, Stefan Bauschard, Dallas Perkins, and Sherry Hall for an excellent tournament. Harvard is a behemoth, and the nature of the tournament makes it difficult to please everyone. Given that, I was so impressed by the implementation of open tabulation this year and by the general improvements in the once-dreaded triples round. This was noticed and appreciated, and demonstrates that tournaments are often willing to explore improvements when folks proactively and constructively contact the directors.

finally, i just want to say that after the stories i’ve heard about this tournament in the past, they must have seriously stepped it up this year. the judging i experienced was nothing to complain about, i loved the online open tab, and the schedule was very relaxed. i am definitely glad that i came. thanks also to the scarsdale team for bringing me along, i appreciate that.

TEX #1 speaker – that’s something I can hang my hat on. I’m chomping at the bits to congratulate you.

This was my last national circuit tournament. To my friends and anyone who has debated me or judged me over the years- thanks for making these past 2 years memorable. I’m really going to miss debate.

Barrington EB advanced over Frederick Douglass Ac KB in quarterfinals, and thus faced Montville Township DD in semifinals and dropped.

On that note, a huge congratulations to Evan Blum. I don’t know anyone who deserves this success more than you do, as I’ve seen you work harder than ever this year. Awesome job, kiddo, you have no idea how proud Natasha and I are of you!

Varun… WTF! but in all seriousness, good job reppin Ridge and getting the break.

Special congrats, though, to Bowyer for finally finishing the qual and Maddy for getting her first bid–both are very well deserved.

And, of course, major congratulations to Perry 3k for the second win in three weeks–certainly impressive by anybody’s standards. Nice job.

Whitman is making history with their team, too.

And to reiterate what others have been saying, the quality of this year’s tournament was really insane. The judging and open tab online were just amazing. Good job to the people running it this year.

Also, sometimes the acts that make the most difference in this activity get the least recognition. Ben Lewis, a Senior in his last regular season invitational tournament of high school who was a very high seed and probably would have gone very far in this tournament, turns around and in a coach over situation gives this young sophomore her chance to shine. Regardless of wins, losses, bids, etc, it is debaters like Ben that make this activity great. Thank you Ben!

In any case, team achievements shouldn’t overshadow individual achievements. Congratulations to Stephanie “Roo” Franklin on completing her qualification. $

Also congrats to Ben Yu for qualifying to the TOC.

Here’s hoping this theme continues and we see continued improvement in the prelim judging. It’s great that so many talented debaters came out to Boston. I think the tournament definitely has the ability to tweak the judge assignments in the future to make the experience even better for all participants.
