I know that both Liz Rogers Brannen and Sherry Hall are checking up on this thread for feedback from the tournament. I suspect that if you have additional feedback to send their way, they'd be happy to receive it, whether posted here or sent via e-mail.

Congrats to everybody that did well. Whitman for winning/dominating, Bowyer for the bid (I forgot to thank you for the oppwins btw haha) Phela for the top speaker run, Erik for almost getting the bid despite the hardest trips/dubs draws imaginable, and Harvard for running a good tournament. Posting stuff online while the tournament went on was a really good idea and will hopefully be looked into by other tournaments. The judging etc. was fantastic as well.

There are way too many congratulations in order after this tournament, but I want to give a special shout-out to the Whitman team as a whole for just being damn good. There was not a single round where I judged any of you (and as you guys all know, it was A LOT OF EFFING ROUNDS) where I was not thoroughly impressed with the quality of argumentation and technical skills. Great job to everyone else who broke/bid as well. And my condolences to all the seniors who got the 4-2 screw at the last regular season tournament of their careers, but don't let one tournament ruin what was probably a great few years.

That being said, the quality of the tournament this year was FAR superior to last year in terms of judging, and community prefs did nothing but help that even more. It's great to see that such a big tournament which was notorious for poor judging in the past has turned it all around in one year. I am looking forward to returning next year, and at the rate things are going I can only imagine how fun and educational it will be.

Congratulations to Perry for winning his second octas bid in such a short period of time, to Roo for hopping over the competition and qualifying to the TOC as a sophomore, and to the rest of the Whitman team for awesome performances across the events! Finally, thanks to Ben for being a true team player, and to the rest of my teammates for making my last regular season tournament a great experience.

Huge congrats to Perry on the big win - you are one of the smartest people I know and just dominated this weekend. Major congrats to Roo on the qual and for hopping for the first time! Oh and congrats to Nikhil for 2nd in HI! Also, this isn't Ben's first time making big sacrifices for teammates - he continuously puts the team and his friends before himself and it's really admirable. Finally, congrats to Anjan and all the assistant coaches for creating such a dominant program and setting records.

Special congratulations to our team of Andrew Markoff and Zack Elias, who won the Harvard Round Robin in policy debate and placed second at the tournament; and special congratulations to GBS's Richard Day and Will Thibeau, and to their ever-awesome Tara Tate -- they placed second in the round robin and won the tournament. We always enjoy our debates with you.

And, back to LD:

Congratulations to Perry and his coaches -- Anjan, Todd, Elyse, Tanya -- for the big win. And, as I noted on the other article, Walt Whitman's TENTH qualifier is one for the history books. The program's domination this season is a testament to a whole lot of hard work by a whole lot of kids.

Congratulations to Jake and his coaches -- Bietz, PDVE, and Tara -- for beating out a lot of East Coast competition on the Big Weekend. Intense stuff.

And finally, YAY to Bobby Esnard for his third bid to the TOC, and YAY to Matt Ross for a solid performance in the Harvard Round Robin. The "4-2 screw" at Harvard is painful.

Finally:

Thanks to Liz Rogers Brannen, Stefan Bauschard, Dallas Perkins, and Sherry Hall for an excellent tournament. Harvard is a behemoth, and the nature of the tournament makes it difficult to please everyone. Given that, I was so impressed by the implementation of open tabulation this year and by the general improvements in the once-dreaded triples round. This was noticed and appreciated, and demonstrates that tournaments are often willing to explore improvements when folks proactively and constructively contact the directors.

OMG Madz we have been through way too much together and I am oh so proud of you. This bid is simply another thing to add to our growing book of friendship: "baby's first bid" It seems like just yesterday it was "baby's first case." But honestly you were awesome today as always and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for next season. Good luck with the at large, I have faith you will get it and I know you will do amazing at TOC and i will be there in spirit cheering you on as always and calling your mom to tell her about it all while simultaneously keeping up with your crazy Starbucks orders. I love you and I am so very proud of you. Keep it up girl <3

Huge congrats to the entire Whitman team on domination in many events. The LD crew, of course, was fantastic. Huge congrats in particular to Perry for yet another win, to Roo for finishing her qual, and to Ben for being the definition of a fantastic teammate.
Congrats also to Nikhil for getting 2nd in HI, and to the Congress and PF debaters for their respective accomplishments.
Whitman is a powerhouse in so many ways, and you all continue to impress me with your ability to be some of the most kind and caring individuals in the activity, while simultaneously wrecking the competition. THAT is thug life ;)

first, Maddy YOU ARE AMAZING! You've had a ridiculously amazing second semester breaking at vbt and emory. If you don't deserve to get the at large, I don't know who would.

also, congrats to bowyer, ben, and kaushik on finishing your quals and to connor and allison for making it to the bid round.

HUGE congrats to maddy on the bid. you've waited a long time and you really deserve it. congrats to julia on the bid round, you have been in SO many bid rounds it is insane, and i KNOW you will get it!

also congrats to bowyer and kaushik for the quals!

congrats to dylan, susanna, and nick on the additional bids :)
and to charlie, jared, diana, patrick, and andrew for breaking.

finally, i just want to say that after the stories i've heard about this tournament in the past, they must have seriously stepped it up this year. the judging i experienced was nothing to complain about, i loved the online open tab, and the schedule was very relaxed. i am definitely glad that i came. thanks also to the scarsdale team for bringing me along, i appreciate that.

Harvard was a lot of fun this year. I'm glad this tournament worked out for a lot of people.

Huge congrats to Bowyer and Kaushik on completing your TOC quals! You both really, truly deserve it.
Congrats to Jared, Sophie, and Connor on breaking and Susanna and Dylan on picking up another bid. You guys rock.

And finally, YAYAYAY MADDY STEIN - YOU FINALLY BID! You are amazing, I'm really proud of you and I know you're going to get that at-large.

This was my last national circuit tournament. To my friends and anyone who has debated me or judged me over the years- thanks for making these past 2 years memorable. I'm really going to miss debate.

There was actually a misprint on the schem for JV Semifinals:

Barrington EB advanced over Frederick Douglass Ac KB in quarterfinals, and thus faced Montville Township DD in semifinals and dropped.

On that note, a huge congratulations to Evan Blum. I don't know anyone who deserves this success more than you do, as I've seen you work harder than ever this year. Awesome job, kiddo, you have no idea how proud Natasha and I are of you!

Congrats to everybody who did well.

Special congrats, though, to Bowyer for finally finishing the qual and Maddy for getting her first bid--both are very well deserved.

And, of course, major congratulations to Perry 3k for the second win in three weeks--certainly impressive by anybody's standards. Nice job.

Congrats to Ben YU for being the first person from Whippany Park to ever qualify to the TOC. Baller.

And to reiterate what others have been saying, the quality of this year's tournament was really insane. The judging and open tab online were just amazing. Good job to the people running it this year.

Congratulations Maddy on an absolutely phenomenal achievement! This bid is a long overdue testament to the amount of work and talent that went into your success this weekend, and over the past five weekends. You are on fire this semester; if your performance does not epitomize the idea behind the TOC at large, then I don't know what does.

GOOD LUCK IN SEMIS!!

CONGRATULATIONS to Stephanie "Roo" Franklin for completing her qual to TOC as a sophomore. That alone is amazing, but to do that on a team with so many juniors and seniors who get spots to tourneys is really something. You really earned this Roo, and we are all so proud of you! (And that rhymes.)

Also, sometimes the acts that make the most difference in this activity get the least recognition. Ben Lewis, a Senior in his last regular season invitational tournament of high school who was a very high seed and probably would have gone very far in this tournament, turns around and in a coach over situation gives this young sophomore her chance to shine. Regardless of wins, losses, bids, etc, it is debaters like Ben that make this activity great. Thank you Ben!

If these pairings are correct, then I believe Whitman has broken the record for number of debaters qualifying to the TOC in one season with 10. That is insane--and so is the thought that roughly 1/7 of the debaters at the tournament will be from Whitman.

In any case, team achievements shouldn't overshadow individual achievements. Congratulations to Stephanie "Roo" Franklin on completing her qualification. $

Yeah to echo post #27. The panels that were put together for Triples were the best I've ever seen at Harvard. I think the tournament made a major improvement in terms of elimination round judging. This is much better than past years where you and 95 of your closest friends had to judge a triples round of JV and then a triple round of varsity.

Here's hoping this theme continues and we see continued improvement in the prelim judging. It's great that so many talented debaters came out to Boston. I think the tournament definitely has the ability to tweak the judge assignments in the future to make the experience even better for all participants.

it seems like the program is implementing high/low within each bracket. therefore, after round two, every debater has 0 speaker points, so the tiebreaker probably goes to opponent wins or judge variance. that is why the seeding seems off within each bracket.
