Walt Whitman Makes TOC History

posted by Jon Cruz on February 14th, 2010

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Walt Whitman High School made history this weekend at the Harvard National Invitational as it qualified its tenth Lincoln-Douglas debater to the National High School Tournament of Champions. No school has ever before qualified a double-digit number of Lincoln-Douglas debaters to the TOC in the same year. Scarsdale qualified nine in 2007; Regis qualified seven in 1991 and 1994.

Congratulations to Perry Green, Daniel Imas, Stephanie Franklin, Jane Kessner, Ben Lewis, Emily Massey, Stefanie Rohde, Caroline Sherrard, Marshall Thompson, and Alex Zimmerman on their achievement. (They are pictured with Perkiomen Valley’s Karlyn Gorski, who trains with Walt Whitman, and with their coaches, Anjan Choudhury, Todd Liipfert, and Elyse Lyons. Tanya Choudhury is not pictured.)

Congratulations to all the Whitman debaters who qualified and especially Anjan and the other coaches – you’ve put in more work than I could even describe over the past few years and it’s paid off in a big way.

in other news, walt whitman finances the entire toc tournament with their entry/hired judge fees. :)

someone better at math than me should figure out how whitman might game the judging pool. if i’m right, this makes it mathematically possible for a single school to paralyze the pairing process. fascinating ramifications….

anyway, congrats to the entire team of students and coaches who work incredibly hard at all levels and all types of tournaments. it is a well deserved accomplishment for an outstanding group of debaters. this is an amazing legacy that will not soon be matched or outdone.

also worthy of praise is ben lewis’ continued focus on team over himself. there is no better example of what it means to be a champion in every sense of the word.

This is a truly unbelievable accomplishment. Congratulations to everyone in the Whitman program. I can’t think of a team that deserves it more. You all are really a tribute to the fact that even though LD is an individual event, debate is at its best when practiced as a team activity. Well done!

To echo Marco – Anjan and Tanya came to whitman only 3 and a half years ago when the team consisted of about 15 kids – with only 4-5 LDers. With about 20 hours a week of work for the team (probably 40 hours for weeks with tournaments), with no compensation, Anjan managed to build an amazing program with over one hundred members.

Anjan, with help from Tanya, Elyse, and Todd, created an LD squad whose talent runs incredibly deep. Anjan and the assistant coaches never give up on any student who works hard and cares about the team – they really know how to push every kid to their full potential.

With such talented and accomplished seniors this year, it’s just amazing that the three qualified juniors have all won 1 or 2 national tournaments and sophomore Roo was in finals of one. Whitman’s TOC bid count accomplishment is due to some incredibly hard working coaches and debaters as well as an immense emphasis on not just being a team but acting like one.

“debate is at its best when practiced as a team activity”

I wish a certain school in socal would figure that out…

Pretty crazy accomplishment though. Really goes to show how actually being an educator like Anjan pays off across the whole team rather than botting a single debater.

This is an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations.

The fact that they’ll be slightly less than 1/7 of the TOC pool is both awe inspiring and terrifying.
