“Quickest decline of an octas.”
Bronx had a much quicker slide back in the day. But I also don’t see Stanford posting the same sort of recovery that Bronx has…I really wish they’d bring back an outside tab staff…

@ Spirtos – Other large tournaments have lower bid levels (UT for example). If the TOC committee if upset enough by this, I imagine numbers won’t be persuasive.
Posted from: 128.135.241.122

This has more state diversity than UT, which is a big difference. Also, while the competition isn’t what it has been , i think it is still better than UT

#19 – what is the basis for your statement? Are you a TOC insider or do you have source?
Posted from: 70.241.79.248
February 7th, 2010 16:49
@19: I have never attended stanford, but from what I have heard over the years, this year’s delays are nothing new to the tournament. I remember in 2008 when there were 2 rounds held in the span of 10 hours, and a debater had to actually forfeit her bid round so she could catch her flight back home.
what I don’t understand is why people continue to spend resources on attending tournaments that are so mismanaged and create such bad experiences.

I actually do think he’s sincere about the topic, but I also think that other people get the wrong incentive to run it if they see it winning rounds, which defeats the purpose.

Both of you- a thread like this isn’t a place to have this conversation. Jordan, there are people who care about how Steven is doing and just because you don’t doesn’t mean you can’t ignore the fact that he’s updating others. Also- look up the thread, he updated for lots of other people anyways. Chill out and just ignore updates you don’t care about instead of calling someone out for simply posting their record.

I must ask:
Have you read it?
Posted from: 99.53.134.199
February 8th, 2010 18:59
@75-
Is it really contrary to the point of the case? I’d like to think the point of Avi running the case would be to at least spread awareness about the issue. That means, even if its done for the wrong reasons, if others start running the case it would make people more aware of the issue. Then when those people win they start running it more often and others run it to. That means numerous people are running it in numerous rounds spreading awareness much faster. Yay micro-political struggles.
Posted from: 128.135.169.222
February 8th, 2010 19:02
but then it becomes disingenuous and loses its value since people no longer see it as a meaningful issue but just a tool to win debate round.

February 8th, 2010 21:01
Prashant:
The case itself is at the link posted above; the first link in that thread is broken, but the very last post has a working one.
The argument is just that women are underrepresented in debate and that the case should be picked up to spread the message and encourage people to do various things about it.
The cross-dressing element, from what I’ve heard anyway, isn’t happening at Stanford, but was at VBT; in the version of the case online (which I think differs in this respect from the one being run now) there are one or two Butler cards at the bottom about subversion and Avi claims some extra solvency through wearing drag and actively subverting at the tournament.

I want to give a special shout out to my team mate Steven Adler for making it to the bid round… Again. That at large is all yours buddy, if you don’t bid again. Which I know you will.
Also, Annie Wright Sonia Vora shook up a big storm at this tournament and I am super proud of her for also making it to the bid round. Yeeeeee Washington State Represent!!!
Thirdly, I met Ilya at this tournament and I want to congratulate him on getting to sems and I’m sorry about Finals. You’re still great.

Last, but most certainly not least, big ups to Catherine for an incredible showing! you’re a brilliant competitor and a very deserving champion. I’m happy we got to db8 someone as amazing as yourself.

1) Congrats to naveen on finals and to many people on bidding/qualling/doing well. Congrats in particular to Catherine, of course, for winning the tournament – I want to say publicly that her NR in doubles (the round I dropped her, ironically) was the best speech on theory I’ve heard, college or high school, in a long, long time. Next time, cross-apply those answers so I can vote for you! =)
2) Thanks to the tab staff for really picking up the pace today. Not only was stuff running ahead of schedule for most of the day, I felt as though tab really picked up their game and got aggressive about making sure they had the judges they needed, accommodating requests (like my need for transportation back to Cal), handling judge constraint issues, etc. This doesn’t really excuse the silliness that was the sat/sun schedule, but it says something about the ability of all of them in general, and Mike Conti (hope I spelled your name right, dude who was running the LD show) in particular, to adapt to concerns and at least improve on a day-to-day basis. Here’s hoping this is something that spills over to future Stanfurds!
3) Something worth noting , especially in light of the recent discussion of this issue – I think this tournament functions as a pretty good argument for MJP over community prefs for the following reason. A miscommunication meant that I was initially placed in the JVLD, not VLD, pool, and thus was not rated by the community. When this was rectified, they had no way to get a community rating, so simply gave people the option to strike me or not. This functionally collapses the system into tab rankings, which everyone seems to agree is not-so-good and flies in the face of the ostensible reason for prefs in the first place. I do, of course, feel as though my decision was well-reasoned in every round, but I really feel for anyone whose chance at clearing was ended with me in the back who wouldn’t have preffed me high, since a miscommunication robbed them of any ability to express this preference. The obvious solution of “don’t use these judges in VLD” is impossible at a tournament like this which is already scrambling for judges, so MJP (which is just as easy to enter as the strikes sheet they gave people in the SQ) would have solved this issue. I can only hope that the impact from this was non-existent because everyone who had me in the back was happy with the decision, but it’s still worth evaluating as a potential harm when considering which preference system to implement in the future. Just something to think about…
4) I’ll fill in some details
doubleoctas:
slp ct > mtn view nn (*mandhania, case, chris harris)
annie wright sv > valley AK (mandhania, case, *brinkley-reid)
octas:
torrey pines nk > cps ak (*meyers, mcginnis, tidhar)

Huge congrats to Lizzie Tao (Mercer Island LT) for clearing again in VLD. She threw up not once, not twice, but three times from food poisoning on Sunday before her bubble-round but still managed to pull out the win. And bye through trips, which was awesome. You’ve come a long long way since Bronx and I’m really excited for future tournaments with you.
Also, congrats to Sonia Vora (Annie Wright SV) on her second bid round and just being a boss in general. Our round was fun — and for once, pretty calm — and I’m sure you’ll get your bid at Berkeley. Domination Station is where it’s at.
Congrats as well to everyone from Domination Station (Ven Elswyk/Nadel/Shagrin) who competed this weekend. It was good seeing a lot of you guys after not having been at a tournament with you in a while, and I’m looking forward to seeing you again at Berkeley and Harker.
Congrats to Catherine for winning, Sasha and Cory on going 7-0 in prelims, the Loyola boys on the bids, Paras and Lucas on the bid-rounds, and to Nikhil, Nikhil, and Neeraj on the breaks.
I wanted to extend particular congratulations to Avi for sticking with his position and really believing in it. I’m incredibly happy for you that you managed to bid running it every single round, and I hope that the discussion of the female presence in debate really has opened people’s eyes. Obviously some judges don’t agree with your running it, and that’s perfectly acceptable, but I definitely support your advocating for awareness in the debate community.

Second, major congrats to Naveen on the finals appearance and the qual. Im glad you are finally getting the recognition you deserve.
Third, congrats to Paras on the bid round. I know its frustrating but you are a baller debater with a ridiculous work ethic and tons of talent. Your day will come…
Fourth, ongrats to Wartinbee on the bid and Seber on the qual. You guys are awesome and definitely deserve this.
Fifth, HUGE congrats to Avi on earning a bid running a position that demonstrates a commitment to a very important and meaningful cause. I am so glad you were able to earn some recognition for this and shine some light on the issue of gender discrimination in debate.
Finally, Maddie, if you are reading this (which you probably arent…), congrats on the break, on being 6-1 in prelims (and being super close to going 7-0), and on being 5th speaker. You still accomplished a lot this tournament, as you have this year, and although this tournmament may have had a disappointing end for you, you are still an awesome debater, and many, many people think that. I cannot imagine how on earth you read my post as denying that the tournament gave *an* iPod to each debater. Or Kamil’s post. Like, I literally don’t know how you gather enough content from either of those posts to get that they were talking about iPods, without also gathering that they were saying precisely that the tournament did give one iPod to each debater.
I also cannot imagine why that post needed to be anonymous.

Also, congratulations to Catherine, of course.
And to Daniel Ki for getting to doubles and giving me the most fun round I had the entire tournament. If everyone engaged feminism as well as you, I feel like some of the structural biases Avi’s case speaks to would be reduced by mere dissemination of feminist ideology.

Its good to hear that the tab at this tournament ended up turning the tournament around getting rounds ahead of schedule. However, I dont think this tournament deserves an easier bid than UT. In addition to the complaints people seem to always have about how Standford isnt run very well, UT doesnt break to partial trips, it breaks to full trips. Thats just rough considering its a semis bid and has consistently extremely good fields. Even though Texas has a lot bid tournaments, it is always an extremely long and difficult walk to get to said bid i.e., this is true at churchill, colleyville, UT, Grapevine, and Memorial. Greenhill and Marks have bids in octos but both those tournaments are extremely difficult to break at as it is. Im not trying to complain, I just feel like a lot of good Texas debaters dont have a chance to qual for the TOC, even though they are capable of it. Also people in texas have complained about the UT tournaments bid status for a long time. On balance, The consensus here is that it should be a quarters bid. How does something like the bid status of a touranment get changed?

James,
If it still has only 5 prelims, UT will stay a semis bid regardless of how well it is run or how great the competition is. There’s a rule that says you’ve gotta have at least 6 – JW gives out exceptions for situations like the year Emory got snowed in, but this is a pretty firm requirement.
If they finally added the sixth prelim and are still a semis bid, you’ve probably got a legit case. In that situation, I’d talk to someone on the TOC committee about your concerns, and ask them what information you should put together to make your case. They typically see some presentations from supporters of tournaments during the TOC, so that would be your shot at convincing them…

First, I would like to congratulate all debaters at this tournament. I was very satisfied by my first West Coast judging experience. Having debated for four years in the Northeast, I am quite impressed with the level of debate on this side of the country.
Second, congratulations to Catherine for another title and another step toward breaking the record bid count.
Lastly, I would like to give major props to Avi for his avid and honorable support of his case and his cause. I usually hate those kinds of approaches toward rounds. However his dedication to the cause was very clear in the round. Congrats on the bid and good luck with your very noble cause. To anyone who interested, check out NSD’s facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=470163945651
Even if you’re not sure if you want to attend, join and post any questions you might have about the camp and a staff member will answer you.
NSD is a fantastic camp. If you have any doubt in your mind about attending NSD, just remember these points:
-This year’s staff is truly exceptional
-NSD’s curriculum is second to none.
-Due to its small size and incredible faculty to student ratio (1:4), you will never feel neglected and you will have access to literally every staff member. Besides office hours, every staff member makes himself and herself available to students at the end of the day.
There is no doubt in my mind that attending this camp made me a better debater. Regardless of your style or preferences, NSD has a lot to teach you.

Were there posts deleted from this thread? People are sign posting like @94 when they are post 90. I could just be bad with numbers though.

I hear that Torrey Pines’ oppressed indians destroyed Palo Alto’s oppressed women. Nice!

@151
After determining who was making the fake posts and speaking with said person, we (the person and I) decided it was in the best interests of everyone for the posts to be deleted.

Avi,
You probably don’t remember me (nor would I expect you to, or even be reading this for that matter) but we debated in the last prelim of SCU this year, Lawrence judged. In any case, not sure how you would feel about this, but it seems like it would be advantageous to have some extra copies of the case with you to give to people who want them. I know the time constraints force you to cover a lot quickly, but for the message to be spread effectively, it seems like it would be beneficial to let people who wanted the case have a copy. I know it’s online, but there are always folks who won’t have heard about it until they’ve just dropped to you. Just a thought.
