Bronx Science Closes Out Scarsdale Invitational

posted by Jon Cruz on February 6th, 2010

SCARSDALE, N.Y. — The sixth annual Scarsdale Invitational drew debaters from across Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York for two days of intense competition in Westchester County.

This year’s tournament featured no final round, as both finalists hailed from the Bronx High School of Science: Carolyn Clendenin and Bobby Esnard are this year’s co-champions. Congratulations to both! (Bobby was also champion as a sophomore in 2008.)

A considerably more stately finalists photo, courtesy of Joe Vaughan, is forthcoming.

Carolyn and Bobby are coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, Matt Dunay, and Andrew Waks.

The championship award is named in the memory of Jeffrey Williams, a member of Scarsdale High School’s class of 1998. Marsha Williams, Jeffrey’s mother, attended the final round for the presentation of the award.

The tournament’s large novice division cleared — like its varsity counterpart — to an octafinal round. By the end of the tournament, however, only two debaters were left standing: the Bronx High School of Science’s Tyler Morris and Regis High School’s Barrett King. In the round, Barrett defeated Tyler to take the title. Congratulations to both debaters!

Barrett is coached by Eric Di Michele; Tyler is coached by Jon Cruz.

Um, can I just say how much I love this tournament? Judging single flights, free wireless, amazing judges’ lounge, late start on Saturday followed by a reasonably early finish… yes, this is definitely the highest quality of life tournament.

To anyone who interested, check out NSD’s facebook page:

    http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=470163945651

Even if you’re not sure if you want to attend, join and post any questions you might have about the camp and a staff member will answer you.

NSD is a fantastic camp. If you have any doubt in your mind about attending NSD, just remember these points:
-This year’s staff is truly exceptional
-NSD’s curriculum is second to none.
-Due to its small size and incredible faculty to student ratio (1:4), you will never feel neglected and you will have access to literally every staff member. Besides office hours, every staff member makes himself and herself available to students at the end of the day.

There is no doubt in my mind that attending this camp made me a better debater. Regardless of your style or preferences, NSD has a lot to teach you.
