Charles Chy Wins Newark
NEWARK, N.J. — This season’s Newark City Invitational marked a celebration of thirty years of debate in the Brick City. Competition at Newark Science Park High School concluded with a final round that brought together Monticello High School’s Dan Cook and William Allen High School’s Charles Chy. The two debated in front of a panel of eleven distinguished Newark Science alumni and other experienced critics. On a 6-5 decision, Charles bested Dan to take the title. Congratulations to both debaters!
Earlier in the celebration of Newark debate, Aaron Timmons received the inaugural Vernell Copeland Farrand Friendship Award and Greenhill’s Tanya Thanawalla won the inaugural Newark Round Robin.
Charles is self-coached; Dan is coached by Sabrina Graham.
Congratulations are also in order for Millburn High School’s Shiv Malhotra and Yang Yi, who closed out the final round of the novice division at the Newark City Invitational. They were declared co-champions.
Shiv and Yang are coached by Michael Paul.
The first judge listed on each panel is the chair.

Congrats to Charles for winning the tournament and the finals appearance at the RR (and going to TOC, that’s a pretty big deal too!). Major kudos to Dan Cook for finally getting that bid, it’s great that your hard work has paid off.
And congratulations to Michael Hassin for having a soul (seems like it’s the talk of the town), being first seed at the tournament, and a solid RR performance.

I just wanted to thank all the debaters at the Newark Science Debate tournament for the $700 raised for Haiti relief. The donation was presented to Newark Science Alum Sedeck [Ferrell Jean] for the Yéle Haiti Earthquake Fund at the award ceremony.

I must say that this was quite an exceptional tournament in terms of the way it was run and especially how the staff/students/tab room handled the problems as they came up.
Massive kudos to Mr. Alston and the Newark team for providing the kind of professionalism, management, and most of all hospitality that I have said is too often missing at tournaments.
If I’m still on the East Coast next year I look forward to returning.

a huge thank you to jon alston and the science/university crews is in order. the hospitality at both the round robin and the invitational, as well as the staff’s generosity and commitment to the activity, was unmatched. anyone lucky enough to get an invite to next year’s round robin should definitely attend, and anyone who can make travel accommodations for the invitational should make the trip to the jerz. (our state is not as skeezy as a certain tv show would have you believe.)
congratulations are in order to shiv and yang for closing out the novice division, as well as to ellington, gareth, tanya, and dan for their performances in varsity.
charles chy is a man of an entirely different class though. he wrecked the shit out of this weekend. see you at toc dude.

A few things to say about the tournament.
A huge thanks to Mr.Alston, Mr.Shelton, Ms.Rosenbaum, Mr. and Mrs. Farrand for actually making the tournament carry on, despite the crazy weather warnings(which turned out to be barely anything in newark)
So, onto the round-robin…I really enjoyed my experience as both a participant and a host during the round-robin, the critiques were extremely helpful toward tailoring my strategies and fixing cases for the future. But I also had a lot of fun…and the food was great(thanks to Ms.Rosenbaum, she never fails to impress). There was a very open environment, and everybody really enjoyed their time there. I also want to thank all of our novices…who helped set up the spectacular food and the rooms…without them, the round-robin wouldn’t have been as great as it was. Finally that the first round-robin is out of the way, we can all decompress and start looking forward to how we can better the experience…so, anybody who had any problems with anything during the round robin, don’t hesitate to email Mr. Alston, or anybody else that may be associated with its plans…even our novices. Finally, I REALLY, REALLY liked the round-robin awards.
Then the actual tournament, we had a bit of a rough start, trying to transition from the round-robin to the tournament proper, but as time went on everything seemed to pull itself together, the ballots were being ran, the food was set up, and everything was flowing smoothly. I can genuinely say I enjoyed the tournament just as much as the round-robin. I devoted my birthday to ensuring the tournament ran smoothly, and for that we have to thank the science/university/ kids for ensuring everything was fine. But like I said earlier, its time to decompress, and we’re open to criticism to ensure we have a smoother tournament in the future.
Overall I had a great experience, from competing in the round-robin, to judging novice rounds, to running ballots, to watching elimination rounds. It was all wonderful.
Finally, I’d like to thank Mr. Timmons and the Greenhill team, for coming all the way from Texas, and for being a true friend of the program. We really appreciated the support, and enthusiasm you guys had when you came here. You were here to celebrate 30 years of debate, and to be truly loved by the entire Newark community, we hope you along with many other people will come back.

I would like to state that my exprience with the tournament and RR was a delight. The hospitality and food was very enjoyable, to also mention I enjoyed the competition. Thanks to mr alston, ms rosenbaum and the university and newwark kids for hosting this event. Anyone lucky enough to have the ability to particapate in this tournament should definatley attend, it was one of the most entertaining events I have done this season. And congrats to Mr. Timmons on his award he certainly deserves it.
Let the spirit of newwark debate ride on!

It wasn’t letting him win so much as being a true friend.
But congrats to everyone in out rounds, grats to Charles on the win and the qual, and grats to Dan on the bid.
I think that Mike’s speech really touched on what Mr. Alston was talking about when he presented the award. Overall, it was a great tournament with great competition. Its a shame it coincided with scarsdale
