Congratulations in the most expected way possible to Catherine & the SLP crew, and Ross & the Valley crew. Fantastic job as always!
A sappy sentimental holiday-ish thank you to Whitman* for being such a terrific group of debaters to work with. I couldn’t ask Santa for a better team. Also, a special congratulations to Ms. Karlyn — I’ve never seen a debater work as hard as you did this summer, and I’m glad it is paying off.
Last but not least, I’d really like to thank Shane Stafford and the entire Blake program. From the first time I talked to Shane about coming to the tournament in the middle of last summer to the minute we left, everyone involved with this program went out of their way to run an excellent tournament and make us welcome. It may seem odd at first to consider coming to Minneapolis in the middle of December, but this tournament is simply Holidazzling!
I’d also like to thank karma for bringing me to Minneapolis when DC was experiencing the worst storm on record.

Congrats to everyone who cleared and did well, but to single out a few people.
Steven Adler – you were super impressive when I judged you, I expect big things.
Pat – you are stylistically the best debater I’ve seen all year. I swear there are times where if I closed my eyes I would have thought I was hearing Seth Gannon give a 2NR.

The Lake Highland Preparatory School team of Danny Welch and Will Miller beat Eagan High School’s Iaan Reynolds and Rachel Markon 2-1 to win the Public Forum Division of The Blake High School annual Edie Debate Tournament in Minneapolis. Lake Highland is coached by Mike Wascher and Eagan is coached by Rob Baron, both members of the staff for the Harvard Institute for Public Forum Debate. Lake Highland advanced to finals by defeating New Trier in semi finals while Eagen defeated Lakeview North.
On Sunday, twelves teams competed in The Blake School’s Public Forum Round Robin and the Lake Highland Prep team of Welch and Miller defeated the team of Fred Enea and Kelsey Hilbrich from The Harker School, coached by Carol Green, also on the staff for the Harvard Institute. The final round was on a 3-2 vote of a panel of four judges with the fifth vote being the combined vote of the remaining twenty debaters that participated in the round robin. Lake Highland advanced to the finals by defeating Walt Whitman in the semi finals while Harker defeated Eagan. Both semi final rounds were 2-1 decisions.

Great tournament as usual, just wanted to note that I really liked the idea of semis and finals trophies with picture frames that were filled by a photographer at the tournament–the trophies themselves are very nice, and it’s always cool to get something a little bit personalized. When the finalists picture goes up it’ll be clear how cool they are. :-)

Congrats to the Miller and Welch. The quarter round between Lakehighland Prep MW and Walt Whitman was the best PF round I have ever seen. Great speakers, great evidence, great analysis, and great demeanor.
If we ever wanted to show the rest of the debate world that PF is real debate, watching that round would make believers out of them. Mr. Schapaugh, there were even warrants!
