posted by Jon Cruz on November 21st, 2009

GLENVIEW and NORTHBROOK, Ill. — The thirtieth Glenbrooks concluded with an epic final round featuring Valley High School’s Matt Kawahara and Walt Whitman High School’s Ben Lewis. In the round, Ben defeated Matt on a 2-1 decision to take the title. Congratulations to both debaters!

The varsity tournament featured 183 Lincoln-Douglas debaters; the top thirty-two advanced to the sextodecimofinals.

Ben is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Todd Liipfert, Tanya Choudhury, and Elyse Lyons; Matt is coached by Dave McGinnis and Marcus Moretti.

The tournament’s extremely competitive junior varsity division brought together ninety-nine Lincoln-Douglas debaters and advanced to the octafinal round. The final round featured Northland Christian School’s Sarah Holley and Scarsdale High School’s Geoffrey Kristof. Douglas Jeffers, Beena Koshy, Mike Roytman, Yatesh Singh, and Alex Zhang adjudicated.

On a 3-2 decision — Koshy and Singh dissented — Geoffrey defeated Sarah to claim the title.

Geoffrey is coached by Joe Vaughan, Patrick Diehl, and J.P. Gooderham; Sarah is coached by Kevin Roberts, Perry Beard, Sam Duby, Daniel Moerner and Josh Overton.

Help me fill in the blanks with the decisions! I wasn’t able to get down the 3-0/2-1 status of many of them.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BEN AND MATT! What an achievement! Special shout out to the very talented, very humble semifinalists as well — Josh and Erik — who, along with the finalists, are some of the very most talented seniors this season.

Congratulations as well to Geoffrey and Sarah, the J.V. finalists, both of whom will soon be dominant players on the national circuit.
