Varun Jayaraman, Shawn Tuteja Are Bump Champions
Ilina Kaufman Wins Novice Title
MONTROSE, N.Y. — The forty-fourth annual Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament at Hendrick Hudson High School — one of the longest-running competitions in the activity — concluded after the tournament distributed its traditional “crappy prizes” (and fine awards) to top-placing competitors across three debate events.
Another tradition of the tournament is that the finalists are declared co-champions in lieu of a round. This year’s champions are the Altamont School’s Shawn Tuteja and Ridge High School’s Varun Jayaraman. Congratulations to both debaters!
Shawn is coached by Shaun Thistlewaite, Sohail Syed, and Alex Castro; Varun is coached by David Yastremski and Charlie Furman.
In the novice Lincoln-Douglas debate competition, the Bronx High School of Science’s Tyler Morris faced off against Hunter College High School’s Ilina Kaufman in front of a panel of eleven current and former Hendrick Hudson debaters. On a 9-2 decision — Sophie Ruff and Zack Struver dissented — Ilina defeated Tyler to win the novice title. Congratulations to both debaters!
Ilina is coached by Noel Selegzi; Tyler is coached by Jon Cruz.
Finally, in the Public Forum debate tournament, the team of Rob Hurd and Aseem Mehta from Needham High School debated the team of Mark Andriola and Joseph Eddy from Regis High School to vie for the championship. In the round, Regis defeated Needham on a 4-1 decision to win the tournament. Congratulations to both teams!
Mark and Joseph are coached by Eric Di Michele; Rob and Aseem are coached by P.J. Wexler.
The first judge listed on each panel is the chair.

First of all, a huge congrats to the Bronx team. I am super proud of you all– five debaters in outrounds is quite impressive. A special congratulations is in order to three debaters: Matt Ross, Emilija Landsbergis, and Tyler Morris. Matt, you always put in a ton of work, and it paid off today. Congrats on the bid! I’m sure it’s the first of many more to come. Emilija, your work effort this weekend was superb, and paid off with a great prelims record and a bid round. Keep it up– great things are ahead of you. And Tyler, congrats on the final round appearance. Starting out strong, in great intellectual health– even if perhaps not in such great ACTUAL health. Nicely done. Outside the team, congrats to all the quarterfinalists. Dylan and Varun, I was quite pleased and impressed with your elimination round performances. Sean and Varun, congrats on winning your “final rounds.” And Karlyn, congrats on also making it to one of the two “final rounds.”
Oh, the delightfully nonsensical traditions that make Bump wonderful. It was a great tournament, and I can’t wait to return next year– mainly to help defend the team’s most important title: The Jon Cruz Award. Also, there’s no such thing as a sufficient amount of crappy prizes. The team always needs new reading material.

Sorry, meant to say “semifinalists,” not quarterfinalists. Though, the quarterfinalists deserve congrats as well. Too much Bump this weekend has rattled my brain– in a good way.

Also, congrats to Sammi on the 2nd varsity break this year.
On a side note, congrats to Devin on the break – you’ll do better next time, congrats to andrew on octas, and to dylan for completing the qual.

Congrats are in order for many – you know who you are! – but especially to Marshall Thompson for a very fun bid round and Alex Zimmerman for breaking. It’s always a shame when people have to coach over their teammates, but actually debating (and not getting a ghost bid) is really tough. You both are fantastic debaters and wonderful teammates and I look forward to congratulating both of you on your spectacular performances in the future.

Andrew encapsulates the feelings of the entire Bronx Science coaching staff: we’re so proud of our kids for an excellent team performance this weekend! Matt, for your first bid; Emilija, for your bid round; Tyler, for novice finals; Dorian, for novice semis; Abhi, Bobby, Carolyn for additional varsity outrounds; Anthony, for reaching novice octas. Awesome job by all of you and by the entire team leading up to and at the tournament! Nice work, team.
And speaking of our coaching staff, many thanks to the ludicrously hard work put in by Douglas Jeffers, Matt Dunay, and Andrew Waks; this work, I am sure, will pay dividends throughout this topic and the year. Many thanks as well to special guest star Jason Sun, who helped out on the novice side of things this weekend. We appreciated it!
For the record, this year’s Jon Cruz Award was the cobweb-covered, grime-encrusted, long-since-retired Joseph Strawbridge Coaches Award — which had been residing in Menick’s basement since ‘95 — and an outsized box of crappy, steamy romantic novels. This adds to my collection, which includes a past NFL district traveling trophy, a set of obsolete Bump policy acrylic awards, and an ever-growing collection of embarrassingly awful books.
The award was appreciated, but not as much as the tournament itself. I prize our ability to participate in competition at Bump each and every year. This is the only tournament in our busy regular-season schedule that all of our LD coaches come to together. We do this because of the excellent competition from across our region (and beyond!), awesome hospitality, delightfully consistent judging, and the great balance between neat acrylic awards and ridiculous crappy prizes. And we do it to hear some off-the-cuff, live wisecracks from the wittiest man in debate, my good friend Jim Menick.
Bump is tucked between two large octafinals bids tournaments — the Minneapple and the Glenbrooks — and that makes it tough, of course, for some to come up to the Hudson Valley in November. But I think those who come almost always find it well worth the trip. Very few tournaments provide a judging pool that promote a fairly consistent debating style — and thus make it easy and enjoyable to prep for the tournament. This is one of the reasons I love Bump.
As an aside, my apologies to Varun for calling him “Naveen” on here. I am surprised that it’s been so long since I made the sibling switch on VBD. I chalk that up to an exhausting weekend of holding down the fort in novice tab, and enduring the eventful bus ride home. We often have unexplainable transportation mishaps at Bronx Science, and this year, I jinxed us by commenting on our luck this weekend in avoiding disaster. Only minutes later, our dear novice finalist turned our bus into the Vomit Comet.
Lastly, congratulations to Cruz/Jeffers KNDI ‘08 alum Madhu Ramankutty for winning the storied Bump Traveling Fruit Cup this year!

Congrats Varun on a very well-deserved win in our octafinal round, and then winning the tournament.
Also, huge congrats to my teammates Nathan for breaking, and Kaushik for getting your first of many bids

Can someone from the Stuyvesant team email me at Charleschy@gmail.com or instant message me at dynamicchuck12. Specifically Grant Weisberg but I think anyone from the team would do.
