Dodgeball at the Glenbrooks!

posted by Jon Cruz on November 11th, 2009

GLENVIEW, Ill. — Ari Parker cordially invites you to attend the Glenbrooks’s first-ever charity dodgeball tournament.

“A team will be comprised of five individuals and coaches are encouraged to play. Hybrid teams are welcome, so if you’re coming alone, use the comment box below or lddebate.org to form a team. Entry fees will be $10-$15. Let the trash talking begin.”

“While LD rounds are at Glenbrook North,” Parker continues, “the dodgeball tournament will be held at Glenbrook South on Saturday night following the conclusion of round 4. I understand that this will make it difficult for some teams without rental cars to attend, but I hope we can accommodate you. If you will have open car seats and are attending the dodgeball tournament, please let me know.”

GBN and GBS are still working out which charities the proceeds will go to. Even though LD and policy will donate to separate charities (if enough LD teams register), we will all play each other. So, team wade/spirtos might get knocked out by Westminster or team conrad/schiano.

Julian was to shy to show anyone this, but he sent me a “greatest hits collection.” This is the best one. Notice the fundamentals and precision:

How to sign up: Two options.

    1. email wthibeau92@gmail.com with your school name, the number of teams that will be entered, and the roster for each of those teams. This means we have your team on record so at registration all you have to do is check in and pay your entry fees. This option is easiest for you as well as the dodgeball tournament staff.

    2. Simply sign up your teams and pay your tournament entry fees at the debate tournament registration on Friday night.

Only teams that register through email BEFORE registration will receive first round byes, so start emailing your teams in.

If anyone needs another dodgeball player, my brother, Ben, is available. He’s supposed to be the most coveted Parker, with a wit that matches Sleepy’s and 3-4 inches on on his twin brother, Zack (bringing his height to a towering 5″6). He also regularly whoops me in ping pong and tennis. Make your offers now.

The FIELD REPORT will reveal all.

For those who are already registered: please don’t forget to pay at registration. There will be a table.

For those who want to register: come to registration!

    Rules courtesy of Will:

First Annual Glenbrooks Dodgeball Tournament- Rules and Regulations
    - Five on five format
    - Single-elimination bracket style tournament.
    - To start, each team will be lined up at either end of the court. The dodgeballs will be lined up on the midline.
o At the whistle, each team will have to race to the center to grab the dodgeballs.
o Before any player is allowed to throw a ball, he or she must touch the endline of the court.
    - If a player is hit ANYWHERE on his or her body, he or she is now eliminated.
    o HEAD SHOTS DO COUNT
    - If a player throws a ball and it is caught by the other team, the player who threw the ball is now out.
o Once the player catches the ball, one of that person’s teammates who was out, can now come back in to the game.
o If the ball is deflected off of one player, or a ball that one player is holding, the same rule applies.
However, Once a ball is deflected, it is not possible for someone to be eliminated from that ball.

what is the “same rule” in the second to last point? if a ball is deflected off of one player, or if a ball is deflected off of a ball that one player is holding, then what?…

also, how is it possible to deflect a ball off of someone? doesnt that mean that s/he was hit and is out?

Some team from one of the Glenbrooks school (I think GBS) won. The refs should write a book about this one, because it was some of the most Tim Donaghy-esque shit I have ever seen. The glorious team of Larry Liu, Jordan Lamothe, Pat Donovan, Eric Thurm, and JROB was unjustly defeated in a clearly rigged final round. The officiating was horrible, and the GBS players were allowed to reenter the game repeatedly after being hit. The refs were actually cheering for the GBS team in finals, and they would just invoke their authority as refs if anyone called them out on making bad calls. Worry not, soldiers of justice, I informed them all that they were morons. Needless to say, they didn’t care.

Dan Meyers posted the videos to his fb!

Thank you to Will Thibeau from GBS for organizing the dodgeball tournament. Here is his letter of thanks to the community:

The first annual Glenbrooks Dodgeball Tournament could not have been a more resounding success. We held a 64-team, elimination styler tournament. After a grueling seven matches, the LD squad of Pat Donovan, Jordan Lamothe, Larry Liu, Josh Roberts, and Eric Thurm took second. (They undoubtedly had the most passionate fans.) The Glenbrook South debate dads (Zimmer, Thibeau, McLeod, Day) and Harvard bound full-back Michael Hirsch**** were crowned champions.
With this honor, they became the first ever winners of “The Saltzman”. We hope this trophy will become a goal of future dodgeball participants.
Because of many of you, we were able to raise upwards of $1000 dollars for the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues and the Lincoln-Douglas charity, The Voices Foundation.
Yes, the refereeing wasn’t perfect and there were some inconsistencies, but you better believe the tournament will be back next year. We hope to have even more of you in attendance.

    Thanks again,
    Will Thibeau,
