i completely agree with 49. arguments only matter if the judge has them at the end of the round. people’s lack of memory requires them to keep a flow. however, the flow isnt necessary. one could potentially judge a round without a flow. without a flow, a judge can still make the right decision. this decision, to be fair, must be based on arguments made in the round. to the judge, the arguments in the round are those s/he remembered at the end of the round. thus a flow isnt necessary. a judge need only base their decision on arguments which actually happened in the round. i agree that it cant “possibly be construed” as bad judging, but basing one’s decision on a flow increases the *probability* that the decision will be fair.

there’s a very simple reason that judging is usually pretty poor in LD at college-run tournaments. if you think about it for 5 seconds it should be pretty obvious (hint: what activity do most college teams compete in? what activity do most college DOF’s have experience with? what activity do you think they care most about?)

I’m glad that Whitman works this way, and it certainly doesn’t take away from the accomplishment because Bainbridge kids still have to win their rounds, but closing out Whitman is easier than closing out most tournaments because the tournament breaks brackets until the bid round.

So for example, this year Jimmy was supposed to debate Lauren in quarters, and Brendan was supposed to debate Kramer. Instead, they each were put into separate quarterfinals match-ups. It’s still incredible though how the Bainbridge kids continue to win, and they deserve huge credit.

It’s unfortunate to see one team close out a tournament multiple years in a row (especially in multiple divisions) but it definitely isn’t because Whitman is a bad tournament or because Bainbridge is the only competition there. Bainbridge is simply that good. Congratulations to Bainbridge, Steven, and especially Paige.

Yay for Bainbridge!!! I’m very excited that Jimmy and Brendan closed out. I’m sorry it couldn’t have been a bigger close out, but I’m glad my team mate (Adler, of course) got in there and broke.

I expect to see some nice and shiny plates tomorrow.

P.S. I think we can all agree that looking back on the Anonymous person and knowing it was Kramer or whoever it was a LITTLE funny. A little. But that’s it. Good job though!

I agree with Mooney and Gans. Required paradigms, strikes, and judge prefs hands down make this the most well-run tourney in the NW. And – not that I’m anti-traditional judging – but I had a traditional judge once in eight rounds including panels in outrounds. The parli team’s presence judging was very much appreciated.

Congrats to everyone who broke, and to Andrea Lin on a solid first Open tourney.

As Adler’s coach, let me tell you that your weak-ass anonymous bitching isn’t doing him, me, or debate any favors.

1) The best debaters did not “barely break” – the tournament broke to only partial octos to prevent marginal debaters from advancing. (And if you’re ham-handedly implying that Adler got screwed and was lucky to break or advance, know that he went 5-1 and was the 3 seed.)
2) The “one team who overfloods the pool” had four debaters in the final eight. A large team didn’t get them there; talent and practice did. That and winning a lot of rounds. Maybe against you?
3) The reason the Northwest has TOC bid tournaments is the same reason every region has them: access. J.W. Patterson believes that qualifying to the TOC shouldn’t necessitate spending the money to travel to Cali and Texas. I, for one, agree with him. WINNING it might, because – as you suggest – the overall competition there is tougher. But just to qual? C’mon. Oh, and by the way, the last TOC winner was from Minnesota.

Of course, I think you know all that. So please just do us a favor and leave our names out of it when you make yourself look foolish. Better yet, have the stones to attach your own name to your post so that we can properly credit you for the fabulous insight.

Congrats to Bainbridge for another impressive showing, and to Adler and Paige for making ‘em work for it. I, too, was pleased by the quality of debates and the thoughtfulness of the judges. It was also really great to have postings delivered via email and website, as well as by the traditional method – and almost always on time. All judges in Champ were required to post paradigms several days in advance and those, like me, who didn’t get around to it weren’t allowed in the pool despite our other qualifications. While I wish I could have judged more rounds, this fairness and transparency led to a lot of happy debaters and coaches. We should all take note of these practices and emulate them even in small, local tournaments. (And I should get my paradigm in on time.) Thanks to Jim Hanson and his team for running such a great tournament!

1. I think it’s really sad that regional hate’s gotta happen. WA’s traditional judging atmosphere [compared to other states] makes the competition inherently unique.

I was actually shocked by how good this tournament was. Jim Hanson’s parli team does a great job judging, and while it isn’t outrounds-of-the-TOC-calibur judging, the tournament is fairly legit. I don’t understand the regional hate either, but you can feel what you want.
