Graham Tierney Wins the Iowa Caucus
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — This year’s edition of the storied Iowa Caucus at Cedar Rapids Washington High School concluded with a final round that brought together representatives of Iowa and Missouri: Iowa City West High School’s Graham Tierney and Staley High School’s Nick Gorman.
On a 3-0 decision — Steve Schappaugh, Brad Noethe, and Allison Stickley adjudicated — Graham defeated Nick to claim the championship bust of our nation’s first President. Congratulations to both debaters!
Graham is coached by Cyndy Woodhouse and Ernie Rose; Nick is coached by Christopher Miller.

Congrats to Graham on the win – it’s been great seeing you develop into such a power house!
Catherine continues to impress me in rounds this year – she’s extremely bright and a genuinely nice person who cares about the activity more than just winning.
There were lots of nice and great debaters this weekend at Caucus – really enjoyed judging and seeing old friends.
Finally, congrats to Fried. Way to keep the momentum going that Tuppy established last weekend. Very proud of you and hope that this is one of many bids to come in the future.

Congrats to Graham for a solid win which continues a major breakout year, and to Nick for coming out of left field to beat down some very intense competition–I judged him four times in the course of the weekend and he impressed me more and more as the tournament went on. Also congrats to Fried on the first bid, and to Catherine on discovering that sometimes four 30’s in six rounds still isn’t good for top speaker (so, by implication, congrats to Matt too). :-)
