Charles Chy Takes Home the Kaiser
Regis Closes Out Public Forum in Semifinals
MONTICELLO, N.Y. — The final round of the twenty-second annual Dr. Robert J. Kaiser Invitational at Monticello High School featured Walt Whitman High School’s Stephanie Franklin and William Allen High School’s Charles Chy. The round was adjudicated by Lily Carbonara, Annie Fuoto, Max Katz, Kaitie Rubin, and Dan Timinsky. On a 3-2 decision — with Carbonara, Fuoto, and Rubin in the majority — Charles defeated Stephanie to win the tournament. Congratulations to both!
Charles is self-coached; Stephanie is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Todd Liipfert, Tanya Choudhury, and Elyse Lyons.
In Public Forum debate, Regis High School’s teams of Kevin Barker and Richard Park, Stephen Goodspeed and Teddy Kim, Brian Cronin and Shane Regan, and Nick Duva and James Elustondo closed out the Kaiser in the semifinal round. Congratulations to all four teams!
Kevin, Richard, Stephen, Teddy, Brian, Shane, Nick, and James are coached by Eric DiMichele.

The judging at this tournament has gotten progressively worse. Having parents and debaters who never did LD judge in out-rounds is simply unacceptable at a semis bid. Why should the tournament retain its bid? It’s a poor quality event and the NE has more than enough bids in the region. If a tournament has a bid it should at least put some effort into creating a good judge pool.
Nonetheless, congrats to all of the semifinalists it takes serious skill and persuasive rhetoric to do well at the Kaiser. Bidding there is a feat.
Oh and congrats NFA ZS on a very good AC in doubles. Wherever did you come up with such a good idea?

1: way to bash the tournament… If you have a problem don’t go next year.
2: I believe someone should talk to Jon Cruz about Bronx’s attitude. There is no way Jon Cruz would uphold such ignorance or rudeness. A: IDEAS DON’T BELONG TO PEOPLE (especially when they are ideas of authors not of Bronx debaters). B: I asked Matt Ross respectfully if he wanted me to stop running it. His reply was no. So there is no reason any of you should be mad at someone for taking an idea and writing a case on it… Sorry both our cases have Aristotle in it but I’m pretty sure that the 3+ hours I spent on reading Nicomachean Ethics and the rest of the time I spent writing the case gives me the ability to run it. IT IS NOT EVEN THE SAME CASE. Did everyone get yelled at when so many people were running the popular Sudan DA on the ICC topic? I think that Jon Cruz would be upset at some people’s ignorance…

Note: If “Kaiser” is not a Bronx Science debater I apologize to Bronx but then Kaiser needs to get an attitude check… It’s amazing how because of people’s over-competitiveness nature the most civilized and smartest of us turn so rude and obnoxious.

Needless to say, a debater who cannot pick up a newcomer judge’s ballot is a pretty limited debater. Come to think of it, though, I’d like to have someone come hang out with me in tab and talk to the parents who travel to tournaments and judge very few rounds for whatever reasons (none of them self-esteem enhancing) and spend endless hours sitting around on their rear ends doing nothing and then come up to me to complain royally. You can tell them they suck and they shouldn’t show their faces again in such august company. I would prefer not to.
(One interesting point about parent judges. A couple of schools struck Raymond Hahn as a parent judge in the LD pool. Father Hahn, a Catholic priest behind many a TOC competitor on the policy circuit and probably one of the top critics in the pool, found this rather amusing, as well as remarkably unlikely.)
Anyhow, in tab we managed to put nothing but A judges on all the bubbles in prelims, and we organized the breaks to maximize the best judges. I think two or three breaks did have a less experienced judge in with a couple of As; this isn’t much different from having one theory judge and 2 anti-theory judges: one adjusts accordingly. I will point out that with a couple of exceptions, the 12 judges of the bid round were bid-earners in their own debate careers; the exceptions were the couple of coaches like Joe Vaughan or assistant coaches like Peter Cancro. The least competent judge for that round, in all seriousness, is the one typing this message (who went in precisely so that there wouldn’t be any lay judges in the round). And given that all the quarter-finalists participating in that bid round were excellent debaters who all deserve to get to TOC this year, I’m hard-pressed to understand how the judging at this tournament was somehow problematic.
There is no question that regional tournaments do not have the same panels as, say, Emory or Glenbrooks. Then again, they are not Emory or Glenbrooks, and they do not pretend to be Emory or Glenbrooks. They do not have the access to such panels, nor the money to afford them. A debater makes a choice: learn to debate in a variety of situations before a wide variety of judges, or learn to debate in a limited number of situations before a limited variety of judges. To complain that regional tournaments are what they are is no different than complaining that national tournaments are what they are. I like having all the variety of big and medium and small tournaments, and an activity open to the widest number. Disparaging the hard work of others is counterproductive. Suggesting improvements and contributing to meaningful dialogue is, on the other hand, what keeps us all going. Explaining to all of us how some schools will be able to participate at all at tournaments without the parents who do all the schlepping when there’s no one else to do it would be a valuable contribution to the dialogue.
I normally don’t bother responding to posts here (or anywhere else), even when I feel strongly about an issue. I’ve got my own multiple venues. But once in a while one just gets tired of things, and feels that one ought to speak up. Those who know me know perfectly well that I will not be reading any responses to this message, so don’t bother.

I agree with everything Jim said regarding the Kaiser and judge adaptation in general. I tab many regional events (most of the time alongside Jim) and I feel strongly about this issue.
My own debaters also know I take judge adaptation very, very seriously. You are not permitted to debate at Bronx Science unless you debate at at least one regional tournament without a bid. I have brought my top debaters each year to local competitions. I believe very strongly in supporting debate of all styles and at all levels.
I was not at the tournament personally, but I know that many who were there — who are not my own debaters — are familiar with the AC in question. I wish that a finger was not pointed towards my team without knowing who posted it, though I can understand why that was the intuitive reaction. I would hope that the post is not from a Bronx Science debater. I am investigating now to see if it is. The comments in the post — both about the tournament and about the legitimacy of having a similar case position, whether with identical cards or not — certainly do not reflect my own opinions nor do they reflect the opinion of my program.
Thank you to Sabrina Graham, Rose Joyce-Turner, Huiwon Lee, and the entire Monticello team for hosting another excellent tournament, and thank you to Jim Menick and Sheryl Kaczmarek — who also direct LD tab at my own tournament — for keeping the rounds running smoothly. (Sabrina also directs PF tab at my own tournament. These folks do a first-rate job for me, just like the job they did at Monticello this weekend.)
The Kaiser has always been an extremely important team-building event for Bronx Science and I am proud of how my kids did. We will be back in force next year.

I would like to apologize about the irrational assumption I had made. I would hope to believe that it wasn’t a Bronx debater as I know many of them and they are well brought up and good people.
Posted from: 98.14.255.196

You do not need to apologize for your post. Your assumption wasn’t “irrational” — it was rational to assume that the person critiquing would be from the team that authored the earlier Aristotle case to which the anonymous post referred.
I do share your hope that the post was not from a Bronx Science debater.

I am just going to pop in that one of the limitations that can hold back any tournament is the amount of judges that you are bringing from your own school. Many smaller schools are only able to survive by bringing along parents, and Many Many kids do their best to make sure that these people know how to evaluate a round in a correct manner.
I can also attest to the fact that we found some judges with little or no experience and gave them a crash course explanation of what should be had of them.
Let’s also throw out there that after the first day a decision was made to pull some judges from the field and have them sit with more experienced or qualified judges so that they could use this early tournament as a learning experience.
Last, but not least, we also did out best to slip many of our former Monticello Debaters into the judging field. Some of them were policy debaters, but that means that they have an understanding of theory above and beyond that of many competitors in the LD field and they have speed recognition that surpasses that of some coaches.
There are going to be upsets at every tournament. Please feel free and email me if you would like a list of instances that i know of in any field in which high seeds dropped early out rounds.
we all have rounds that we wish we could have back, but to blame them on poor judging rather than congratulating a good round of an opponent is a pretty narrow minded thing to do.

I don’t know Charles and have never seen him debate, but I just wanted to say that seeing the words “self-coached” next to the name of a semis bid champ is pretty impressive. :-)

kaiser – dude we all know the tourney has horrible judging, who cares dude…get over it. Plus if Chy wins that negates any bad judging because he certainly deserved the win, I mean given all the semi-finalists it doesnt seem as if the judges made any unorthodox decisions.

no there were definitely bad judges there. I think I was considerably lucky I didn’t get too many. the two dissenters in finals both dropped me in prelims as well. You should have heard their rfd’s at the end of the day.

Erm, to clarify, I don’t mean any offense to anyone or the tournament, I just think from a strictly flow perspective the judging wasn’t that great in some rounds. This isn’t to say that I don’t appreciate the efforts that went into trying to enrich the pool. For instance I know Koren was drafted like a week before the tournament because he got an e-mail saying they were trying to diversify the pool. I also think the post Mr. Menick made about adaptation being an important skill for debaters to be extremely relevant.

Sounds like what somebody would say when they realize how wrong they were. Maybe just apologize for your comments instead of dancing around the issue?

Congrats Charmeleon! Getting a bid/winning a tournament while you’re self-coached is sweet. Also, congrats on the speaker award, I remember that at the BF you had some trouble adapting to lay judging; I’m glad you have learned to adapt.
