Jon Cruz Announces the 2009 Bronx Round Robin
BRONX, N.Y. — Jon Cruz has announced the participants in this year’s Bronx Round Robin. The event — one of the oldest such tournaments in Lincoln-Douglas debate — will be held this year before the New York City Invitational at the Bronx High School of Science.
This year, for the first time ever, the Bronx Round Robin will be hosted at New York University.
“I am so pleased that twelve of the finest debaters anywhere will be staying with us after the tournament to participate in this competitive and educational forum,” Cruz commented.
Past champions of the Bronx Round Robin include Ron Anafi of Wellington High School, James Mallios of the Bronx High School of Science, Jason Baldwin of Vestavia Hills High School, Claire Carman of Vestavia Hills High School, Greg Goldfarb of Miami Palmetto High School, David Singh of Apple Valley High School, Brian Fletcher of Valley High School, Anna Manasco of Saint James School, Jeff Hannon of Nova High School, Doug Lieb of Scarsdale High School, Douglas Jeffers of Dulles High School, J.R. Thorsen Lake Highland Preparatory School, and Ravi Sankar of Trinity Preparatory School.
At last year’s Bronx Round Robin, Jake Nebel of Trinity Preparatory School defeated Paul Tyger of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School on a 3-2 decision to win the storied title. Jake was also the top speaker.

I am not a fan of posts that question the wisdom of the person selecting competitors for a round robin, but to clear up any doubt, some folks from the lab in question in post #5 were shown some love but didn’t show the love back. ;o) (No harm, no foul — a round robin prior to a seven-round tournament is a tough commitment, but I’m glad that some of them will be at the tournament itself.)
I’m thrilled by the talent and character of all twelve debaters assembled. What a fun and intense group! I am especially pleased that a number of area programs asked if they could send observers, because this year’s round robin is going to feature some incredibly high-quality rounds. I look forward to sharing videos of the round robin and the tournament with the debate community.
And I’m particularly excited for dinner at Japonica. Just sayin’.

Good luck to all the competitors, but especially to all my G-hill RR mates: Sasha, Erik, Tanya, Karlyn, Catherine, and Blewis. And off course good luck to my teammate Jrob. You got this man.
