Courtney Ballentine Wins the 1996 TOC
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The 1996 Tournament of Champions concluded with a victory for Iowa over Minnesota when Valley High School’s Courtney Ballentine defeated Apple Valley Hills High School’s David Singh on a 3-2 decision. Congratulations are still in order for both!
(I’m returning to my ongoing project of insuring an institutional memory for Lincoln-Douglas debate, in which I have been carefully organizing, transcribing, and digitizing materials I have been finding in the Chellgren Center Debate Office at the University of Kentucky and that have been donated to me by R.J. Pellicciotta. My thanks to R.J. and to Linda Barker, J.W. Patterson, and Roger Solt for their assistance!)
Courtney was coached by Nick Nelsen; David was coached by Pam Cady.

This was the beginning of the so-called “Apple Valley curse,” broken in 2008 by Chris Theis, who, of course, went on to become the only two-time TOC champion.

Jon,
I remember listening to Seamus D vs. James S. online, back in the day. You should try to find that.
