ALEXA REYNOLDS will work with the policy team. Alexa is a 2009 graduate of Valley.
MARCUS MORETTI will work with the varsity LDers. Marcus is a 2009 graduate of some school in New Jersey, I think, but it might be Connecticut.

We (Alex Castro and Sohail Syed) are looking to coach an individual or team for the upcoming 2009-2010 debate season. We would prefer to coach a team or individual from outside the northeast, however regardless of your location shoot us an e-mail if you are interested at castrosyed@gmail.com.
Achievements
Sohail Syed (Niskayuna 08)
Fully Qualified to TOC
Bid at Hendrick Hudson
Bid at Princeton
Winner of the Lexington Round Robin
Semi Finalist of Harker Round Robin
Bid Round at Manchester
Alex Castro (Arthur L. Johnson 09)
Fully Qualified to TOC
Bid at Hendrick Hudson
Bid at Lexington Winter Invitational
Winning record at Lexington Round Robin
Bid Round at Columbia
Bid Round at Newark
Sohail Syed coached me during the 2008-2009 season and has proven to be a fantastic coach. He has a very good work ethic, and is an effective and intelligent coach. I had no debate camp experience and he still got me qualified and ready for the 2009 TOC. We are very compatible together and have flexible schedules that will allow us to make an even more fantastic coaching duo than debating duo.
Alex Castro is one strange kid. Anyone who knows him and has a sense of humor loves his quirkiness. And this quirkiness is apparent in his attitude towards debate. Often he points something out that borderlines on sheer genius and I wonder how I missed it. Whatever he doesn’t have in a formal debate background his natural debate intuition accounts for and makes him a potentially amazing coach. His achievements speak for themselves.

Glaring Omissions grow some balls and post your real name. Maybe you should get to know Sohail instead of acting like a prick before you accuse him of being a racist. We are sorry if any of his comments have made you wet your pants and cry, but in all honesty Sohail is not a racist. He has a ton of friends of all races. So lets break this down.
Conclusions
1- Glaring Omissions is a pussy that is too scared to reveal himself.
2- Glaring Omissions is also a facebook stalker.
3- Glaring Omissions is wrong in all of his assumptions.
If you have a problem with my bro, respectfully voice your opinion or e mail us, but don’t act like a sarcastic prick.

“i have lots of black friends” is not a reason you get to pepper what you say with variants of the word “nigger,” whether dave chappelle (a brilliant comedian, by the way) said it or not. quoting that routine is not the only example of this trend, nor is it always about race:
“Brohail Syed you dirty nig
March 19 at 11:2″
“Brohail Syed i was gonna say homo
but now that Persins wrote on yer wall..
homos”
speaking of which, castro: nice rampage about pussies balls and pricks, that was a great display of your sophistication especially when it comes to gender and heteronormativity.
by the way, facebook is public you morons. it is not stalking to observe someones activity on facebook. what exactly do you think it is for if not broadcasting the shit you do to the world? maybe you should be a little more cautious about what you post.

final note: my point is not “sohail is a racist.” dont know if he is, tend to think he isnt. but when youre in a position of power in debate – and scary though it may be, college-age freelance coaches are in positions of power – you should probably do your best to make our white-wealthy-straight-male dominated activity more inclusive. you never know whose feed your less than flattering activity will show up in, so i think its best to avoid the very appearance of evil as the saying goes. again, im not making a character judgment, just observing what i think is an unsettling pattern (from lots of people, not just sohail)
i dont really see this thread going anywhere productive, so that’s all i have to say. peace.

I don’t have black friends and I’m insulted at the idea.
And yes I’m very very powerful. I actually run the TOC, NFLs (both debate and the sports league), and the CIA.
But to your ‘real point’ – I’m not obligated to censure myself because you find my humor unsettling. I think your point about exclusion, is frankly, bullshit. Anyone who can see my posts on their feed is my friend, in fact my privacy setting is that only friends (and friends of friends) can see my profile. So how exclusionary am I if the people being excluded are people I know and talk to who know that, while i love any sort of racy humor, I am NOT a racist, sexist, or homophobe. If you think using this humor is “bad” because it has a substantive effect, then you really don’t understand how racism and exclusion work, especially in debate. Moreover, why is it ok that Dave Chappelle use racial stereotypes? How black does someone have to be before they can make a joke?
You want to rant about exclusion target the real causes. You want to help, go work with some schools without programs for free. Give money to, and only support, tournaments with low entry costs. Post your prep online.
And ya you were making a character judgment. Your initial post was inflammatory. You didn’t start talking about your benevolent and high minded goal till Castro called you out. Plus, I don’t buy for one second that you didn’t intend to make me seem racist. In fact you wrote “why didn’t you mention that Sohail is an avid user of racial slurs” as relevant point for being a coach. Only two things matter as a coach – Character and the dedication/work. Your comment only pertains to one, my character. If you want ppl to act responsibly maybe you should be like that too. Maybe you should have talked to me first?
All in all, I’m not angry at you. I’m more so disappointed. You are picking a silly battle. Ff you really care about these issues you would know that race, marginalization, and discrimination are more complex than your stupid objections.
If you wanna talk my sn is benesyed. I wont tell ppl who you are and we can talk this through. Hell maybe we can do something really helpful for those who are excluded. Until you decide to be open and honest, I can’t take you seriously.

In lieu of all this fake shit about people caring about exclusion I’d like to make the following offer
I’m willing to be a free coach for any 1st or second year debaters who come from schools without really strong programs. I can coach on-site (if I’m already there) and edit cases online or just talk about stuff. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and this seems like a good time to do it.

i just happened to notice “glaring omission” post and i need to clarify a few things.
1) he’s not a racist, you seriously have to be delusional to think no one uses racial humor, we all do it with people we know and care about, so the harm is minimal at best.
2) Sohail is a great coach, regardless of what you think of his character. take it from me, he was my coach for the following season, castro and i spent lots of time with him. sohail is a great person, and is very generous in helping anyone who is interested in debate. he helped me finally break through and clear at tournaments, as such hiring sohail is a great addition to any team, since he is an excellent coach.
3) finally, sohail isn’t just my coach he’s my friend, defaming his character behind a phony names makes you seem like a coward. if you have a problem with the way he is, confront him, don’t post it online on vbd just to potentially screw him over in terms of a coaching job. you claim about sohail’s character, what about a guy who says whatever he wants anonymously, lies about it, and then runs away. who ever you are, even if sohail drops the n bomb, at the end of the day he is still a better person then you.
btw.castro is a sophisticated person, normal, presentable, what ever you want to label him as. being my teammate for the past 3 years i can attest to his character also. who cares if he used vulgar words to describe you, he’s defending his bro. so seriously stop face book stalking, cuz seriously idc if its public if u take time to copy paste, notice every racial slur used, u rlly need a life. so if your going to say anything negative about those who are associated with alj, take it up with me, or else just keep your mouth shut or in this case turn your comp off and get out of ur basement.

Bietz/Cruz – can we clean this thread? It’s supposed to be “formal announcements” of openings. It’s not supposed to be people posting that they are looking for work, its not supposed to be people calling out the accomplishments of others. In all 21 comments, there’s only one formal link posted.
If you want this to be a good resources for people looking for coaching jobs, some editing is needed. I know this runs contrary to an open forum, but it would make the resource better for people who are interested in reading genuine opportunities.

Matt Malia will be taking over as Head Debate Coach at Edgemont for the upcoming season. Matt served as our Assistant Coach this past season and did a tremendous job. He is a graduate of Binghamton University where he was a successful policy debater (4-time NDT qualifier) and captain of the team. He debated in high school at Lakeland, so he has been attending regional circuit tournaments for a long time. As many of you already know, he’s also a great judge, so determine your preferences accordingly. Matt loves debate in the Northeast and I know he’s really excited about this opportunity.
Edgemont is still accepting applications for the Assistant Debate Coach position for next season. E-mail me if you are interested. The position pays $11,000 and requires that you be local to Edgemont.

Hey everyone!
I’m a rising senior from Texas looking for a personal debate coach to help me next year.
About me:
I’ve been largely self taught most of my career, however I’m looking for a coach to take me to the next level. I plan to attend all the Texas bid tournaments as well as Bronx Science. I may also attend the Glenbrooks and/or Berkeley if finances allow. Despite having only about a year and a half of debate experience, I’ve gotten to elimination rounds at the great majority of the Texas bid tournaments I competed in last year. Outside of Texas, I went to Berkeley, where I reached the bid round. My goal is to qualify for the TOC next year. I love the activity and I know what it means to work hard to get what you want.
What I’m looking for:
My ideal coach would help me choose/find effective arguments perhaps by informing me which arguments were successful at camps/tournaments, revise and edit cases/theory positions/blocks, perhaps help with research occasionally, and help answer my questions.
It would be great to have a coach who is involved with coaching/judging on the national circuit, has had success on that circuit as a coach and/or as a debater and is willing to work as hard as I am.
Money:
Any reasonable price for coaching is probably acceptable – I’m open for negotiation. I’m not mega well off but i’m willing to pay to have a good coach over a cheap coach.
If interested, PM me or email me at neilvivekgrigg AT gmail DOT com
