Congratulations as well to Mike Bucaria, Harry Liberman, Sean Janda, Zak Pyzik, Dylan Scher, and to TEAM WHITMAN — not just Ben, but Perry Green, and Ellen Noble, and not just PF stars Benjamin Wolcott and Sarah Houston, but also the moonlighting policy debaters, Nathaniel Adragna, Daniel Imas, Emily Massey, and Caroline Sherrard!

It’s ironic Karlyn, that you and I would hit at octas as I mentioned in our 5th prelim round that I enjoyed my last debate. I’m glad it was with you in the end. Best of luck with your debate future.

First off, major congrats to Ben on finals and Perry on octas – you’re both great friends and it’s been awesome working with you guys the last few years. You’ve both sacrificed a lot for this team and myself – and I’m infinitely thankful. You guys really care about debate and not the game that surrounds it more than anyone I know. I’ll miss yall’s never-ending debate banter with each other.
David – the year of Hansel and Gretel is ending – you’re one of my best friends and I’ve had a blast with you the last four years. You’re really the spirit of our team.
Congrats to everyone from Whitman who broke in all the events, there’s too many of you to name. Special congrats though to Ben and Sarah on PF finals, Drew on 2nd in congress, Jane on Extemp semis, and the aaron-alex PF combo for finishing it off without losing an outround. Anjan, you’ve created a pretty sweet team.
Finally, congrats to Karlyn on the championship! You’re a great friend and will tear it up on the circuit next year.

While I think the three second-place finishes (PF, LD, Congress) have left Whitman the consummate bridesmaid, I just want to say I could not be more proud of all of this team and more lucky to coach such a group of students. From start to finish, you each put your team first and I am so appreciative to work with such amazing students.
I also want to congratulate Karlyn, Mike Contillo, and Mr. Heidt for the great Perkiomen win. Karlyn, you are very talented, but more importantly, very humble and gracious. While this is a great accomplishment, you have even more to come.
I also wanted to thank the assistant coaches at Whitman. This was easily one of my favorite years in the activity because of the opportunity to work with you all. While there is still NFLs to come, it means a lot to me to work with a group of people who care first and foremost about extending the benefits of this activity to others. And also, Tanya and Elyse make me feel tall by comparison. :-)
I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but I just wanted to spotlight this for anyone who read this far. Perry Green, Alex Edelman, and Aaron Schifrin are complete rock stars! Perry Green was coached over in elims of the NCFL tournament for the SECOND year in a row (last year Semis, this year Octos); Alex and Aaron were coached over in their final debate round (semis of PF) together since Alex is graduating — and would otherwise have been in finals of BOTH NCFL and TOC. Under such circumstances, I can imagine few debaters who would have been as understanding and supportive of their teammates as these 3 were. The rewards of that character will mean much more in life than the difference in trophy size. Thank you so much!

Karlyn, you are one of the finest debate students I’ve ever taught. You know that, and you know that you represent a fine tradition at your school. More than you know, I appreciate the way you’ve met the challenges you’ve faced, and the way you’ve been so resourceful in seeking out help when I could not offer it. Such is the mark of a first-rate learner. That you did not walk away from debate when I first approached you, that you stuck with it when it challenged you, as I knew it would, to rethink your own place in school and the goals for your high-school career…all of that is a mark of a fine character. I marvel at such achievement.
And then…I think I could extend such sentiments to all students involved in forensics. I’ve learned more from you in my 15+ years of coaching than from my single year of limited policy debate in the mid ’80s. So I thank you all…those who read these postings, and those who don’t. What you provide to your teachers and coaches (and I’ll take the wild liberty to speak for them) is one of the miracles of existence: That with guidance, perseverence and dogged determination, you astound us, your teachers, and make us all better people because of it.

Seth Teleky was 4-1 and had ten ballots and should have cleared, as he had sufficient points. Unfortunately, his second round was listed as a “forfeit,” despite his ballots having been sent back to me separated from the rest (and therefore presumably processed at some point).

NCFL just released a full result package on their website, and issued an apology to Seth that he should have been in outrounds.
To be honest, I wonder why they don’t open up prelim ballots up for inspection to the pbulic before making outrounds. That way people can make sure this sort of error doesn’t happen.

It seems like there were some problems with how tab was run. This makes at least two errors that I know of. First, the error with Seth Teleky, and second, when my teammate and I hit in outrounds, our coaches went to find out our seeds. They told them the wrong seeds. Something must be wrong when tab can’t do a simple task like telling coaches correct seedings for a coach-over situation. I would agree with 82 in opening up tab after round five (or, better yet, just having totally open tab…but that won’t happen) to make sure stuff like this doesn’t happen. I also wish that they would do away with the number coding system. It does nothing but create confusion and inconvenience at this point, since those who want to break the code can do so nearly completely by the end of Saturday at the latest. This, in combination with an open or semi-open tab, would make errors much easier to catch before a major mistake is made.
Just some thoughts on how the tournament could be made better and more efficient. I’m not trying to criticize anyone in particular, so please don’t take it the wrong way.

I’m more than happy to level criticism. Tab errors are common in the best of systems. Refusing to open tab, when you know that there is a history and a probability of tab errors, is unnecessarily closed-minded. The NCFL is overly traditionalist on this point.
I see no reason why coaches who prefer to know information about their debaters’ performances shouldn’t be allowed to know. Not only is this a good way to check back tabulation error, it is also a basic recognition of the professional standing of coaches. To suggest that coaches must be kept in the dark is paternalistic and retrogressive.
If I were Seth Teleky, I’d be uncontrollably furious. No amount of apologizing can make up for the fact that he prepared for success, was successful, but was denied the opportunity to compete. The NCFL should immediately make the tab room open to coaches for the purpose of preventing similar errors in the future.

Its honestly horrible what happened to Seth. Im not sure if they’re registration fee’s at the NCFL, but I’d seriously consider getting Seths registrations money back. Bronx Science essentially dished over cash for absolutely no reason. Maybe NCFL should pay for all the expenses that Seth faced.
This isn’t even a joke anymore. As an independent traveller I have seen how costly tournaments can be. And when a mistake like that was made, the tournament ought to face a greater consequence than just optionally issuing an apology.

I have been a strong proponent for open tabulation rooms. I run one at my own tournament. In the Northeast, I have led the charge to post check sheets to the public during prelims and to post brackets to the public during elims. Transparency is important because it prevents errors like this one (and like the ones faced by five of my debaters at this year’s New York State Forensic League tournament) and because it levels the playing field in elimination rounds.
I’m the coach of an enormous team, and can send scouts into virtually every elimination round at an area tournament should I choose to do so. But I was also a competitor on a very small team in the area, and know that this isn’t possible for all programs; having a bracket available to the public prevents large squads from gaining an advantage over small squads in this regard.
I run many tab rooms and attend many tournaments. Too often, coaches conflate debate style with tabulation policy. That is, somehow, transparent tabulation is lumped together with in-round practices that these coaches dislike. One need not be overly traditionalist, as Dave puts it, in tabulation policy even if one is supportive of traditional debate. The two have nothing to do with each other. (I’d like to think of myself as a pretty big supporter of “traditional debate.”)
I wrote a brief article on the issue of open tabulation rooms — before both sets of tabulations occurred — that will appear in the NDCA newsletter due out in June. I will be writing an extended article for VBD as well.
