Spreading on Capitol Hill?

posted by Jon Cruz on May 21st, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Douglas Wilder, a professional speed reader, was asked by House Democrats today to expedite the reading of a 900-page climate change bill following a ranking Republican’s threat to use the reading as a means of delaying the passage of the legislation.

“He spoke so quickly,” claimed CNN, “it was impossible to decipher his words, as listeners began to laugh and applaud.” Debaters, you be the judges. Click here to access a video featuring Wilder. (And check out the video of the “Fastest Talker” from That’s Incredible! in the comments!)

As an aside, this is not the same Douglas Wilder who was once governor of Virginia.

He was very clear, but I’ve heard faster reading.

I agree, the second video was significantly more impressive.

I just learned that the guy in the second video is a young John Moschitta. He does voice overs for a lot of commercials and sci-fi cartoons, as I recall, including Transformers.

I think he was also in the Guinness Book of World Records at one point as the world’s fastest talker. And he starred in a famous 80s commercial for FedEx that is often listed on lists of “greatest commercials of all time,” along with the Macintosh ad!

    Neat stuff.

Here’s the ad — though he’s not speaking nearly as quickly as he is in the clip from That’s Incredible! —

“He can read an entire page of text out loud in 34 seconds.”

I think (at his speed, or lack thereof) they mean the table of contents, not an actual wall of text.
