Mark Harris Wins Third VHSL State Championship

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Virginia High School State Debate Tournament was held on the campus of Liberty University and featured Lincoln-Douglas debate competition in three divisions.

In the AAA division — featuring the largest schools — defending champion Mark Harris of First Colonial High School (pictured) earned his third consecutive title by defeating Kasey Sease of Warwick High School. In the AA division, Charlottesville High School’s Elizabeth Hylton defeated Potomac Falls High School’s Samantha Strasser to win the state title. Finally, in the A division, Madison County High School’s Mary Margaret Petersen defeated Wilson Memorial High School’s Stephanie Painter to win the state title. Congratulations to all six debaters!

Mark is coached by James Godfrey; Kasey is coached by Deon Garner. Elizabeth is coached by J. Michael Evans; Samantha is coached by Lynne Damaty. Mary Margaret is coached by Donald Hitt; Stephanie is coached by Jay Singleton.

I want to congratulate Mark Harris on this tremendous achievement. Most impressive!

And while I am sure she is embarrassed that I am posting this, Brenda Harris — Mark’s mother — is unquestionably one of the most dedicated and supportive debate parents I have ever met (even if only over e-mail!). Parents like Brenda are part of what makes me so happy and eager to run VBD.
