Avi Arfin Wins CHSSA State

posted by Jon Cruz on April 26th, 2009

CULVER CITY, Calif. — The 2009 California High School Speech Association State Tournament began with sixty-four debaters and, employing a double-elimination system after the first round, continued until only two debaters were left standing: Palo Alto High School’s Avi Arfin and Monte Vista High School’s Percia Safar.

In the final round, Avi defeated Percia to take the state championship. Congratulations to both debaters!

Avi is coached by Jennie Savage, Daniel Sheehan, and Katherine Brainard; Percia is coached by David Matley and Adam Swaller.

Congrats to Percia. Second year in a row she’s reached late outrounds. This is very tough tournament to consistently do well at.

Percia beats Gordon in Semis. Congrats to both. To Percia for her consistent success and to Gordon for making it to semis as a sophomore. Impressive performances for both of them.

CONGRATULATIONS, AVI!!! Avi is unquestionably one of the nicest and hardest working debaters competing today. This is a richly deserved honor. Special shout out to the entire supremely awesome Palo Alto coaching staff: Jennie, Daniel, and Katherine! (My apologies to Katherine, I can’t believe I accidentally omitted you from the coaching credits!)

I want to extend a huge congratulations to Percia. That was an incredibly close round, and one of the most substantive, informative rounds I’ve had on the topic.
Also, thanks to everyone else in attendance for making it a really fun and competitive tournament. And thanks to my teammates and coaches-you guys are an awesome support system.

FYI, Catterton’s post is wrong. I don’t remember exactly, but sems was slightly different.
