Bellaire Wins National Public Policy Forum
NEW YORK, N.Y. — For the second consecutive year, debaters from Bellaire High School have been named champions of the Bickel & Brewer/New York University National Public Policy Forum Champion! Bellaire received the $10,000 grand prize and the Bickel & Brewer Cup during an awards banquet this past Saturday night in Manhattan.
The championship team included Jacob Aronowitz, Andrew Garbarino, Judy Sun, Sharon Sun, Matthew Times, and Wilma Qiu.
The second place prize of $3,500 was awarded to Plano Senior High School. $1,000 prizes were presented to the semifinalists, Deer Park High School and Glenbrook North High School.
The NPPF is the only contest that gives high school students the opportunity to participate in written and oral debates on issues of public policy. The 2008-2009 competition began in October when more than one hundered public and private high schools – representing thirty-two states and fourteen foreign countries – submitted essays on the topic, “Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives in the United States.” After five months of hard work and three rounds of written debate competition, the field was narrowed to just four teams. Those teams received an all-expense paid trip to the finals, which were held April 17, 18, and 19 at NYU.
Video of the finals competition will soon be available for viewing at the official NPPF web site.
