posted by Jon Cruz on March 21st, 2009

NEEDHAM, Mass. — The third annual Northeast Championships, hosted this year at Needham High School, concluded early Saturday evening. The varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament concluded with a close out, as the Bronx High School of Science’s Matt Dunay and Adam Silver advanced to the final round. Congratulations to both champions!

Matt and Adam are coached by Jon Cruz and Douglas Jeffers.

This year, champions were declared in three divisions of Lincoln-Douglas debate, two divisions of policy debate, and an open division of Public Forum debate.

The junior varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate division functioned as a seven-round tournament in which ballot count determined the placements. Bronx Science’s Emanuel Schorsch emerged as champion, with teammate Carolyn Clendenin as runner-up.

Emanuel and Carolyn are coached by Jon Cruz and Douglas Jeffers.

The novice Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament ended with a final round that pitted the Bronx High School of Science’s Ellington Kirby against Hendrick Hudson High School’s Sophie Ruff. The round was adjudicated by Les Phillips, YiYang Li, and Aracelis Biel. On a 3-0 decision, Sophie defeated Ellington to win the novice title.

Sophie is coached by Jim Menick; Ellington is coached by Jon Cruz.

The varsity policy debate tournament concluded with a final round that pitted Lexington High School’s Hao Shen and Tyler Engler against the Bronx High School of Science’s Ian Irlander and Zack Elias. In the round, Bronx Science defeated Lexington on a 3-0 decision to win the tournament. Congratulations to both teams!

Ian and Zack are coached by Kathryn Clark, David Marks, and Jon Cruz; Hao and Tyler are coached by Sara Sanchez.

The novice policy debate tournament concluded an identical matchup between Bronx Science and Lexington: the Bronx High School of Science’s Daniel Fabrizio and Aidan McKeever faced off against Lexington High School’s James Fraser and Ben Wobbe. Daniel and Aidan defeated James and Ben on a 2-1 decision to win the novice title. (This round, as an aside, also determined the novice championship at the Westchester Classic, held at the end of February.)

Daniel and Aidan are coached by Kathryn Clark and Jon Cruz; James and Ben are coached by Sara Sanchez.

Congratulations to both teams!

The Public Forum debate tournament cleared all debaters with a winning record to a full Sweet Sixteen. The lateness of the hour caused a declaration of co-champions in finals: the maverick Daniel Cmejla from Lincoln-Sudbury High School shared the title with the team of Katie Wong and Dasha Fayvinova from the Bronx High School of Science.

Daniel is coached by Tom Danko; Katie and Dasha are coached by Joseph Gazzola and Jon Cruz.

The Bronx High School of Science took top honors as the championship school. Sweepstakes awards were based on the preliminary round results of the top seven entries from each program across events. Westford Academy won the tournament’s Small School Award.

Congrats to Kaushik for making it to quarters, and to the entire Needham team. Also, props on successfully hosting a way bigger tournament than Needham is used to.
