Daniel Garber Wins CPS
Lucia Song is Novice Champion
OAKLAND, Cali. — The seventh annual College Preparatory School Invitational began with seventy-two varsity Lincoln-Douglas debaters and ended with one: in the final round, Mountain View High School’s Daniel Garber defeated the Meadows School’s Jordan LaMothe on a 3-0 decision to take the tournament.
Daniel is coached by Eric Palmer, Stephen Hess, and Alex Smith; Jordan is coached by Dan Meyers and Mike Spirtos.
Earlier in the evening, Daniel’s teammate, Jing Wang of Los Altos High School, was presented with the John McKay Voices Award. The award is named for one of the twenty-first century’s most successful Lincoln-Douglas debaters, who was the champion and top speaker at CPS in 2003.
The novice tournament, which began with a field of thirty-six debaters, broke to a partial octafinal round. In the final round, James Logan High School’s Lucia Song defeated Torrey Pines High School’s Auberon Lopez on a 3-0 decision.
Lucia is coached by Tommie Lindsey, Jr. and Justin Hinojoza; Auberon is self-coached.

A big thank you to Lexy Green and the College Prep School for running such a good tournament. The hospitality and efficiency at the tournament were both excellent. I strongly encourage people to attend CPS in the future. Another thank you for Sheila McKay and the Voices Foundation for their contributions.
I’d also like to congratulate Jordan for his strong showing at CPS, part of what will be an admirable debate career. Good job also to each of my teammates, including Jing, who is keeping the John McKay top speaker trophy in The Mountain for another year.

@30 the bid was at finals.
I’ve heard rumors next year it will be at octas and the field will be limited to 17 debaters.
1st speaker in varsity was MVLA (Jing Wang)
2nd speaker in varsity was Lynbrook NS (Narayan Subramanian_
3rd speaker in novice was Lynbrook VJ (Viveka Jagadeesan)
Props to Avi for having a talent other than abusing novices, to Narayan, Rohit, Belinda, Viveka, Denis and everyone from Lynbrook for being awesome and to Carl, who’s ok too.

First, I want to say that this was an amazing tournament and that everyone who can should definitely attend next year. It was extremely efficiently run. The judging was amazing. There was great competition. The food was pretty good too. I think the bid will definitely move up to semis in time.
Next, congratulations too…
Naveen and Avi for repping Session 2 by making it to octas and quarters respectively.
Shabbazz for quarters and the terrorvision DA.
Jordan Lamothe for finals.

I want to echo Garber above.
Big thanks to Lexy/John/Jay/Cps Crew for hosting a great tournament. This tournament never disappoints. Free food. Great judging. Timely tournament. It’s a tough combination to constantly deliver, but they find a way. Thanks for the effort and service to the community.
Big congrats to the MVLA crew. Four of the top nine seeds. Two in semis. Top speaker. Champion. Not a bad showing.
And of course Jordan. A great showing for a great debater. The up and down season has ended. It’s a constant rise from here on.

I want to thank all of the great debaters who came to the tournament, especially Sasha and Jesse, who made the longest trips to get there. Thanks also go out to a super crew of judges who allowed us to run substantially ahead of schedule with single flights for EVERY elim. Thanks also to our debaters, past and present, who stepped up to run ballots, check ballots, clean up, and go above and beyond the call. I still can’t believe I left campus at 7:30 PM!

Congratulations Garber on an excellent performance. You have always been a great friend and teammate and you deserve this championship more than anyone I know.
I also want to congratulate Jing on winning the John McKay Memorial Award as the tournament’s top speaker. You had an awesome, positive attitude over the weekend and I’m really proud of you. Way to go!
Further, congrats to Jordan Lamothe on his finals appearance; you have a bright future ahead of you as a debater.
Thanks to Lexy and the CPS crew for running an exceptional tournament. The food was tasty, the organization efficient, and the judging pool superb. All should put CPS 2009 on their calendars.

I’ve been to CPS for four years. It’s a really well run tournament, with great food and judging. Go to it.
Congratulations to everyone, but I especially want to congratulate the James Logan novices. Grats to Mujda from missing the break by a single round, you’ll keep getting better. Grats to Sophia for clearing. You’re definitely cut out for this. Grats to Paulina, and tough luck with the pairings in quarters. Grats to Lucia for stomping everyone. I expect more stomping in the future. Much more stomping.
Also, I hope everyone has a dope holiday season. Take care and the whole bit.

I would like to give another thanks to Lexy, Jay, and everyone else who helped put on the tournament. The hospitality was amazing, like every year. Getting out of bed at/before 7am on a weekend (IN THE COLD) can be a struggle, but there is nothing like delicious scones to make it all worthwhile. Also, any tournament that gets us home before 9pm both days is a winner in my book.
