This was my seventh consecutive year at the Longhorn Classic, and it just keeps getting better and better every year.
I would like to offer my most sincere congratulations to Tyler, Andrew, James, and Claire, as well as their respective coaches Josh, Kris, Nathan, and Shane. A nicer, more deserving group could not be found. I am particularly proud of Andrew–this bid is well earned and long overdue. Westlake represent.
And finally, I would like to thank the tournament for providing a massive amount of HEB fried chicken, and the entire pool of judges and coaches for–with some notable exceptions–adhering to the two piece limit.

I’d like to echo previous poster’s sentiments about the success of some very hard-working and deserving debaters this past weekend at the Longhorn Classic. I only judged quarters, semis, and finals, so I’m sure I missed a lot of fantastic rounds earlier in the tournament, but the debaters in those rounds I did judge really stood out. I would like to extend a special congratulations to Tyler Cook on winning a bid tournament. Every time I judge this kid, it seems like he gets better and better, and that doesn’t happen by accident. I am very glad to see your dedication and talent go recognized this year.
I watched Andrew Waks deliver some of the best speeches I’ve seen yet this weekend, and though I made up the majority of a decision that denied him the honor of taking the tournament (and my RFD may have seemed a little disoriented and overly critical), I am consistently impressed with his debate talent. Congrats on a long overdue bid this weekend–you more than deserve it, even if I don’t always agree with your strategic decisions.
Finally, congrats to Claire Daviss for an outstanding breakout this weekend. I knew when I judged you as a novice that this day would not be long in coming. For several years, you have been consistently amazing on the local circuit, and I’m happy to see your talent and dedication finally pay off for you in a big way.
