Jan/Feb Resolution Released Tomorrow

posted by Bietz on November 30th, 2008

questionmark.jpgRIPON, Wis. — The resolution that spans from mid-December (Blake and CPS) all the way to the beginning of May with the TOC will be announced tomorrow by the NFL. Which topic are you hoping for? A list of possibilities can be found after the jump.

* Resolved: Military conscription is unjust.
* Resolved: On reservations, sovereignty claims by indigenous peoples ought to be prioritized above the plenary power of the United States federal government.
* Resolved: A parliamentary form of government is preferable to the United States presidential system.
* Resolved: United States law ought not recognize marriage.
* Resolved: United States immigration policy ought to prioritize admitting skilled workers over reunited families.
* Resolved: The United States ought to submit to the jurisdiction of an international court designed to prosecute crimes against humanity.
* Resolved: Public high schools students in the United States ought not be required to pass standardized exit exams to graduate.
* Resolved: The United States ought not issue torture warrants.
* Resolved: Vigilantism is justified when the government has failed to enforce the law.

In the interest of disclosure, the TPS AC for standardized tests will be a standardized test that the neg has to pass if they want to win the round, and I will bring a scantron with me to every tournament.

    just under twelve hours…

i’ll just throw out that i disagree with my learned colleague, mr. nelson, about the indigenous persons topic because debaters will not approach the topic as lawyers would. debates about comity, tribal courts, and full faith and credit would be fascinating. we would not see such debates.

also, the immigration topic is one of the best worded and timely debates ld has seen in a long time. parli/pres is also a fantastic topic but probs not for the toc.

**i’m not hinting, i definitely don’t know what it is.

    @54

at camp we used this topic…
there was alot of debate about whether people could use this or not.

ultimately we decided that we would use evidence that wasnt icc specific because theres alot of other courts and we werent all that sure if the topic meant a pre existing court or a hypothetical court(since most prexising international courts prosecute more than just crimes against humanity)

sorry if it came out the wrong way… i just have that stuff ingrained in my head still

the icc still is an international court

i think post 14 is answered by post 2.

waiting for the jan/feb topic is like waiting to meet your partner in an arranged marriage…you’re thinking ‘will they be ugly? rich? force non-topical cases about skepticism?’

i hope it’s icc. that would be like finding out i’m marrying tina fey. if it’s immigration it would be like finding out i’m marrying lou dobbs. or lube, as i call him.

I think what devin means is that the ICC is an international criminal court but that does not mean the debaters are bound to defend the ICC as the international court that is used.

this topic is a less specific version of the actual ICC topic a couple of years ago

    @ devin and melin

yeah that makes sense, especially after noticing it being “an international court” it seems as if there are many variations and possible scenarios to defend.

    @quinn

the reason why i don’t think it will be conscription is that 1) it was debated at many camps (and usually those aren’t picked, until maybe nationals) and 2) its just not that deep in my opinion.

wesley, you and i need to have a chat about arranged marriages. will you dissent at my wedding? i may need to “lose” your invitation. :)

the topic will be posted sometime between 6am and 7am CDT depending on when sandy comes into the office. she’s the only one who knows it. if you check at 7:30am, it will be up.

Thought: This will be the first topic where it seems to me that the new voting system may have an effect. It is the first topic where most voters will be assuming that novices already have at least one topic of experience, and it is the topic for a lot of National Qualifying tournaments and of course the TOC. Our sensibilities about what makes a topic more or less likely (”too policy,” “too complicated,” “too controversial,” “uses big words,” etc.) may have to be adjusted.

That said, I think it will be vigilantism or conscription.

i like all of the ways people are referring to the indigenous peoples resolution. i also like the topic itself. i would be happy with the international courts topic or the marriage topic, as well.

i cannot envision the vigilantism topic without also picturing the melodrama of a western film. talking about high school exit exams for four months also seems silly to me. the trolley scenarios already provided us with enough melodrama for the year, so i’d prefer not to have to debate either of those topics.

It better be courts and better not be marriage or testing. seriously you want to debate four months about tests? How will you escape thinking about the tests you are not studying for while you are working on debate if that work is about tests? This just seems like a depressing prospect.

On a completely different note I would like to wish Cherian a public happy secret birthday! He refuses to confirm if this is indeed his birthday but all evidence seems to point in that direction. So happy 30th? 29th? or whatever it is big guy!

    Now back to AP LIT.

I really hope the fantastic class of 2009 doesn’t have to endure another non-fantastic topic. Injuns/courts/torture all seem pretty cool to me, but I’d be happy if we avoid marriage/testing/AP Lit.

reservations (can we please use words in the topic to refer to them kthx) is a doozy of a topic. the good debates on it will be very interesting and multi-faceted, and the bad debates will be awful. i would be happy if it was picked.

marriage is…interesting. i guess this is the first year where no one debated the church/state topic, which is what the marriage topic will probably end up looking like conceptually and strategically–affs will hem and haw about what it means to “recognize” marriage, and negs will come up with all sorts of tiny counterplan strategies. it won’t be a boring topic, but it won’t be fun to be aff.

A nice majority of the people here plead for the International court topic, mistakingly referred to as the “ICC” topic, to be chosen, but I disagree. I too went to a debate camp that focused on this topic, but I believe it would be more interesting to have a topic we’re a bit less familiar with. And also considering the fact there’s another debate camp this winter break, I’d dread to hear more about the IC topic.

Please NO standardized testing! Nor marriages. e
