The 2009 SoCal Championships/VBT
Hosted by Victory Briefs & The Law School at UCLA
January 3-4, 2009

Dear Coaches:

You are invited to the SoCal Championships/VBT, which will be held on the campus of UCLA on Saturday & Sunday - January 3 & 4, 2009. We are expanding our tournament to include IEs and other debate events.

In 8 years we have built the VBT into one of the nation’s largest and most competitive tournaments in Lincoln Douglas debate. In addition to drawing the majority of NFL National and TOC champions and outround participants, in 2008 the VBT drew nearly 200 debaters from 17 states. We are a quarterfinal qualifier to the Tournament of Champions in Lincoln-Douglas.

This year we are hosting tournaments in:

* Lincoln Douglas
* Policy
* Public Forum
* Dramatic Interp
* Humorous Interp
* Original Oratory
* Extemp
* Duo
* Prose/Poetry
* Expository
* Congress

We already have firm commitments from a number of the nation’s top speech schools to bring their teams. We are dedicated to having each division bring top-competition, judging and staffing. As such we have brought in a number of championship coaches to direct our divisions:

Tournament Directors: Mike Bietz, Harvard-Westlake, CA; Victor Jih, Brentwood School, CA
IE Director: Drew Hammond, Eagan HS, MN
LD Directors: Cherian Koshy, NFL; Dan Meyers, Meadows School, NV; Lexy Green, College Prep, CA
Extemp Director: Chris McDonald, Eagan HS, MN
Public Forum: Glenn Prince, Rice University, TX

We will be adding more expert directors with championship experience to our ranks to help ensure that each division is given the care and attention needed to run an efficient, fun and excellent competitive experience.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mike Bietz at bietz@victorybriefs.com.

We look forward to seeing you in January.

Warmly,

Mike Bietz

A Note on the Schedule:
Since we are continuing to add directors for different divisions, we are not quite ready to release a full-schedule. We want to make sure we consult with coaches to make sure we have a schedule that maintains ultimate efficiency with enough time built-in for anticipated delays - such as powering rounds, late judges and walking times.

What we do know:
- Registration will be on Friday night beginning at 6:00pm at the tournament hotel.
- Debate will start before speech on Saturday and Sunday.
- We want to be done with awards by 6:30pm on Sunday. The only events that should continue after awards are LD and maybe policy debate.
