Matt Dunay, Ellen Noble Are Bump Champions
MONTROSE, N.Y. — The forty-third annual Malcolm A. Bump Memorial Tournament — one of the oldest and most storied continuously-running competitions in the activity — has concluded after the tournament distributed its traditional “crappy prizes” (and fine awards) to top-placing competitors in varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Public Forum debate.
Another tradition of the tournament is that the finalists are declared co-champions in lieu of a round. This year’s champions are the Bronx High School of Science’s Matt Dunay and Walt Whitman High School’s Ellen Noble. Congratulations to both debaters!
Earlier in the evening, Matt was presented with the Traveling Soup Can for placing as top speaker.
Matt is coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, and Taarini Vohra; Ellen is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, Elyse Lyons, Todd Liipfert, and Stephanie Caravias.

Ellen Noble you are a superstar! I am so proud of you, Ace! Also, of course major props to Emily on finishing your TOC quall and Perry on continuing your excellent season. I really wish I could have been there this weekend.
As a side note, this is now the third Bronx-Whitman final round in a TOC-qualifying tourney this year, and we feel fortunate to have such great competition from our neighbors to the north. Big congratulations to Matt, Saboor, Jon and the Bx Sci crew. Props as well to Ms. Karyln (told you it would happen) and Mr. Tong and everyone else (and thank you to Mr. Menick and the Hen Hospitality).
Finally, this finalist picture looks like Matt is awkwardly trying to put the moves on Ellen.

Jim Menick and the Hen Hud Sailors put on what has long been the most consistently efficient, enjoyable, educational tournament in this neck of the woods. I was honored to been a member of the tab staff this year — the novice tournament rules! — and was even more honored to have a student win and place as top speaker at one of the longest-running tournaments in the activity. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: you should put Bump on your schedule.
