Perry Green Wins Manchester

Bronx Science Closes Out Policy; Walt Whitman Wins PF
posted by Jon Cruz on November 1st, 2008

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, Mass. — The final round of Lincoln-Douglas debate at Manchester Essex Regional High School’s thirtieth annual Tim Averill Invitational featured the Bronx High School of Science’s Matt Dunay and Walt Whitman High School’s Perry Green.

Emily Osborne, Alex Weaver, and P.J. Wexler adjudicated. On a 2-1 decision — Weaver dissented — Perry defeated Matt to take win the tournament’s crystal gavel. Congratulations to both debaters!

Perry is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, Elyse Lyons, Todd Liipfert, and Stephanie Caravias; Matt is coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, and Taarini Vohra.

The tournament did not feature a final round in policy debate, because the Bronx High School of Science closed it out! Congratulations to the team of Daniel Lee and Dustin Lee and the team of Irene Bruce and Julia Reinitz, this year’s co-champions!

Daniel and Dustin are coached by Kathryn Clark, David Marks, and Jon Cruz.

In the final round of Public Forum Debate, Walt Whitman High School’s Itai Farhi and Tom Niblock faced Needham High School’s Rob Hurd and Aseem Mehta in front of a panel of Jonathan Peele, Jackie Ruback, and Robert Sheard. The judges voted unanimously for Walt Whitman, the recipients of the tournament’s first crystal gavel for Public Forum Debate. Congratulations to both teams!

Itai and Tom are coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, Elyse Lyons, Todd Liipfert, and Stephanie Caravias; Rob and Aseem are coached by P.J. Wexler.

The tournament also featured novice competitions in both Lincoln-Douglas debate and policy debate.

In novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, Christopher Siemer and Robbie Flatow of Regis High School closed out the final round and were declared co-champions. (Christopher coached over teammate Chris Luccarelli in the semifinals.) Congratulations to Regis!

Christopher and Robbie (and Chris) are coached by Eric Di Michele.

In lieu of a final round in novice policy debate, the team of James Fraser and Ben Wobbe from Lexington High School and the team of Jennifer Fang and Ailin Cao from the Bronx High School of Science were declared co-champions. Congratulations to both teams!

James and Ben are coached by Sara Sanchez; Jennifer and Ailin are coached by Kathryn Clark and Jon Cruz.

    GO ALJ!!!!! GO WALT WHITMAN!!!!!!!!!

I know these conversations never happen on here. But anyone want to shed some light on the arguments being made on the topic.

I’m more interested about the neg. Given that 95% of the Lexis articles seem to be AFF and a vast majority of topic articles seem to just refer to Roger Clegg to explain the neg side.

    Thanks for any info,

    Sam

Feel Free to email me (Duby@wustl.edu) or IM me (SLDUBY) if you don’t want to talk on here

First, thank you so much to Jonathan Peele and the wonderful Manchester team and community for all their hospitality this weekend. I continue to think this is one of the most charming tournaments in the country. If you have never been to Manchester before, it is a really site to see how strongly the entire community supports debate. I wish I could have made it myself this year.

I also wanted to extend a major congratulations to Tom/Itai and Perry for winning PF and LD, respectively. Also, props to Perry, David, and Stefanie for completing their TOC quals. And, more generally to the whole Whitman LD squad for going 5/5 on breaks this weekend and 28/33 on breaking at TOC-qualifying Varsity LD tournaments in September/October. You are all so hard working and so team-oriented and I am so fortunate to work with students of your talent and dedication. I’m really happy to see your work being rewarded. Congrats all!
