Jake Nebel Wins Big Bronx XXXVIII

GDS Takes Policy; Mountain Brook Wins PF
Drew Vollmer Wins Legislative Debate
posted by Jon Cruz on October 26th, 2008

THE BRONX, N.Y. — The thirty-eighth annual New York City Invitational — hosted by the Bronx High School of Science — came to a close with an incredible final round that featured Trinity Preparatory School’s Jake Nebel and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School’s Paul Tyger.

Cherian Koshy, Chris Castillo, and Neil Conrad adjudicated the final round. On a 2-1 decision — Castillo dissented — Jake defeated Paul to win the tournament. He was presented with the Richard B. Sodikow Award.

Jake is the first LD debater in the history of the tournament to appear in the final round twice, and the first to place as top speaker — and thus win the Peter Colavito Award — twice.

This round was recorded and will be available shortly on VBD, along with rounds from every flight of Big Bronx XXXVIII from the first preliminary round through every elimination round.

Jake and Paul advanced, after seven preliminary rounds, out of a field of one hundred and forty debaters from twenty states; the top thirty-two debaters in the tournament cleared into the sextodecimofinals. This was the second final round appearance for both Trinity Prep and Strake Jesuit at the tournament. Jake debated in finals last year; Patrick Mahoney was the reserve champion in 2006.

Full results from the New York City Invitational’s tournaments in Team Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Legislative Debate will be available late on Monday. (Full panels for Lincoln-Douglas Debate will be available then as well!)

We’ll be in DeWitt Clinton High School tomorrow, which will make live updates difficult because we may not have Internet access. I’ll have the sextodecimofinals posted Saturday night, though!!

Thanks to all for their patience and good cheer this afternoon; this one-time-only conflict with both parent-teacher conferences and the specialized public high school entrance exams — due to our irregular weekend this year — was a real challenge but everyone handled it gracefully. It was a great reminder of why this is such a wonderful community. But more on that later. Back to tournament prep!

Running commentary on the Hershey v Nebel Round

This round started pretty late because ms eller accidentally locked the door and the janitor couldn’t find the key. But now that the camera is set up and the audience is settled in, all is good and well in this rematch of glenbrooks finals

AC - Ken reads a Scanlon contractualism case. It’s well nuanced, so lets see how jake handles it.

CX - Jake doesn’t take too kindly to being told what his ground is by the ac

NC - Jake reads a nuanced deontology NC, hijacks the AC framework in 2 places and puts out about 18 arguments on the AC.

CX - Ken asks about the morality of killing a single person to save humanity, a reasonable objection to the NC

1AR - Ken puts out offense on the NC before going to the AC framework and defending contractualism

NR - Jake goes for arguments that prove that quantitative weighing is impermissible, which come off both the AC and NC. The descision calculus is solid, so the 2ar is gonna have to be good

2AR - the 2ar is good, which makes this one of the best rounds i’ve seen on this topic. ken goes for standards analysis that proves that equality is integral to contractualism, and defense off the NC to mitigate jake’s offense. Its all up to Mira now…

    Jake wins, with double 30s.

I just wanted to thank Jon Cruz for running an awesome tournament. The Big Bronx was definitely the most fun and hospitable major tournament I’ve ever attended, the free food was incredible and the judging phenomenal.

Great tournament- every bump in the road was handled well. The judging was great, even after they single flighted rounds 5, 6, and 7.

Congrats to Gurdane on 4th speaker and dropping in the bid round, Christian on the bid and Matt and Nick on sextodecimos- breaking in this field alone was definitely an accomplishment.

Congrats to everyone who did well, and props especially to Akshay for a fourth straight break this year; this kid’s too smart, technically sound, and dedicated to not have a major breakout soon.

This was my third year at the tournament, and my first as a coach/judge. Thanks to Jon for making it just as great of an experience as in the past, and especially for maintaining excellent judging in the single flighted rounds 5-7. That was epic.

Congratulations to Jon Cruz for running, yet again, the perfect tournament. Competition, judging, and hospitality at the Big Bronx are unparalleled, and it’s now permanently on Palo Alto’s travel calendar.

Many thanks as well to the wonderful Ilene Dunay and her amazing group of parent volunteers who helped make our team’s experience so great. And a shout out to Seth, Matt, Josh, and the rest of the Bronx LD squad who helped us immeasurably throughout the tournament.

Props to Jake on winning, and big ups to Avi on a great tournament with a tough break. You’ll get em next time.

    Three rounds I judged:
Octos: Strake PT vs. Lake Highland GB was a 2-1 (Vohra, Haver, *Sheehan)
Quarters: Millburn TM vs. Mountain View DG was a 3-0 (Sheehan, Levi, Webber)
Semis: Trinity Prep vs. Scarsdale was a 3-0 (Sheehan, Conrad, Chernick)

Also, nice job on the tournament Cruz and the Bronx squad (including the parents, who I think we can agree might be the nicest people in the whole world)- It makes coming all the way out to NYC worth it 10x over.

And nice Paul, your round with Garber was just nasty.

For anyone undecided about attending the Bronx tournament next year or for anyone who could potentially make it to the tournament next year, read on:

So many people have already congratulated Jon and the Bronx team on their incredible tournament that anyone reading this thread must conclude this tournament is one of the best in the country and they would need an incredible reason not to add it to their schedule for next year.

My perspective on what makes a tournament worth going to is similar to most peoples; quality of competition, quality of judging, hospitality, timeliness, ease of logistical planning, coolness of trophies :)

But anyone who has coached high school debate knows that any guarantee that the above criteria will be met comes directly from the person who directs the tournament and those that help that person. Jon Cruz and the Bronx team proved this weekend that they are among the best in the nation at planning and executing the highest caliber of tournament a high school debater can attend.

Every tournament has a thousand variables and potential monkey wrenches that can disrupt or derail the tournament and the final test of a tournament director and their staff is how they handle those situations. Jon and the Bronx team didn’t just handle those few situations they managed to do it and remain helpful, pleasant and gracious while delivering on the promise that they would meet those criteria.

Jon has sacrificed so much of his life and effort for our community and he deserves our unequivocal thanks and respect. Thank you Jon and thank you Bronx Science for all that you did this weekend and throughout the year for my team and our community. We will be seeing you next year not just for the food, the judging, the hospitality, the smiles or the competition…but because we want to get an even cooler trophy. :)

On the fence about going to Bronx next year? I’d like to know what your excuse is… Thursday morning I woke up at 4 a.m. having just recovered from a migraine headache, flew across the country from Oregon to New York and missed my friend’s birthday party. No offense to my friend (who was a debater so hopefully I’m off the hook)…but it was totally worth it.

Congrats to everyone on the tournament, thanks jon and I’ll see you there next year.

This is the second year I’ve come to Bronx… and it’s been great both years. Needless to say there were plenty of hurdles that could have made a lesser tournament thoroughly unenjoyable - but not this one. It was a great weekend, and a fantastically well-run tournament. I hope that I end up in the Northeast for college so I can attend again next year!

thanks to jon for running an awesome tournament. despite some difficulties and having to single flight more rounds than previously anticipated, the quality of the tournament and the judging pool wasn’t sacrificed. i had a great time, and any teams unsure about bronx should definitely add it to their schedule next year.

At some risk of redundancy, I want to thank Jon Cruz for running such a fine tournament. Jon and the Bronx crew dealt with several unexpected obstacles, never lost their cool, and took great care to ensure that everything was taken care of during the tournament and the round robin. What I find most striking though is the quality of competition and judging that Jon is able to attract. Given the trend at other tournaments on the national circuit these days, Jon’s relentless pursuit of hiring qualified judges was impressive and the results of which truly refreshing.

As I said earlier, this tournament was incredibly-well run, and I’m really thankful that Jon did such a tremendous job with it.

Nevertheless, I just wanted to point out an unfortunate tab error that happened to Akshay. In rd. 7, tab entered him as having received 24 speaks, instead of the 29 speaks that the judge actually gave him. This means that he should have received 143.5 instead of 142.5 H/L, and 201.5 instead of 196.5 total speaks. That would have made him the 20th speaker, and would have made him 20th, instead of 23rd seed. This sort of thing isn’t inconsequential: the 20th seed managed to make it to semis. So, I just wanted to express some sympathy for Akshay. Rough, but things will get better.
