In a Close Out, Scarsdale Takes the Kaiser
NFA Takes Policy; Bronx Science Wins PF
MONTICELLO, N.Y. — Scarsdale High School “took home the Kaiser” for the second year in a row as Eric Thurm and Josh Seiden closed out the tournament. This is the first time that the Dr. Robert J. Kaiser Invitational has been closed out since 1995. They emerged victorious after besting a field of over one hundred and thirty Lincoln-Douglas debaters. Congratulations to both debaters on this achievement!
Eric and Josh are coached by Joe Vaughan and Patrick Diehl.
The Kaiser’s policy debate tournament came to a close with a final round that pitted the Newburgh Free Academy team of Neil Bapodra and Anuj Bapodra against the Stuyvesant High School team of Daniel Goldstern and Anna Gordan. On a 5-0 decision, Newburgh Free defeated Stuyvesant to win the title. Congratulations to both teams!
Neil and Anuj are coached by Sheryl Kaczmarek; David and Anna are coached by Julie Sheinman and Jessica Gates.
The Bronx High School of Science Daniel Wilkofsky and Tina Ritter took home the Kaiser in Public Forum debate after defeating Newtown High School’s Biota Hung and Quinlan Mitchell in the final round of the tournament. Congratulations to both teams!
Daniel and Tina are coached by Joseph Gazzola and Jon Cruz; Biota and Quinlan are coached by Larry Saladin.
Finally, the 2008 Rose Joyce-Turner Spirit of Debate Award was presented to the award’s name sake, Rose M. Joyce-Turner. Last year’s inaugural winner was Robbie Grabowitz of Hendrick Hudson High School.

First and foremost, I’d like to thank Team Monticello for doing an impressive job balancing the demands of a tournament that experienced EXPLOSIVE growth this year. The Kaiser has no entry limits, which makes it a great TEAM experience that Bronx Science treasures each year. We had a lot of fun this year.
Second, major congratulations to Eric and Josh for closing out the tournament, and to Alli for earning Hendrick Hudson’s first bid of the season. Special recognition is also in order for the ever-growing and ever-intense Potomac squad and to their coach, Tom Rollins. I want to give a special shout out to Madhu — Cruz/Jeffers KNDI ‘08 represent!
Most of all, though, I want to give a special shout out to my own very hard-working team. Saboor and Bobby, congratulations on your first bids of the season; I’m proud that you, Adam Matt Dunay, and Seth — who also cleared at the Kaiser — are already on the road to Kentucky so early on in the year. Congratulations as well to Emilija on her first bid round and to Matt Ross and Abhi for breaking. And YAY to Dan and Tina for winning Public Forum, and YAY to Dylan and Madison for making it to semis in policy!
Whew.
Much has been said elsewhere already about an unfortunate tab error that was caught right after outrounds were released; the tournament stopped the double-octafinal rounds a few minutes into them so that correct pairings could be released. Some have complained of conspiracies or fairness. One of my students, Josh Prenner, was initially listed as having cleared but then did not clear. He believes, as do I, that the tournament should be commended for quickly correcting an error that would have denied outround participation to folks who had the records to compete in them.
I think folks also don’t seem to understand the practical nature of these kinds of errors: yes, it sucks that records were misreported and that this skewed the pairings of one or two individuals. Given the huge number of pull-ups (and even some double pull-ups!) due to large squads making up the majority of particular brackets, it’s difficult to say how much this error truly affected pairings.
Lastly, this tab error and its swift correction brought out the best in a lot of people.
I’d like to single out Adam Silver from Bronx Science, who insisted that I break with our team rule regarding coaching over the higher seed so that his teammate might be able to compete, as she had been competing (without hitting a teammate) before the initial rounds were stopped. What a mensch.

Congrats to all.
In Texas, for all tournamnets to be state qualifiers they are required to release all prelim ballots along with what is required to break in order to allow coaches a 15-30 minute period to ensure there were no tabbbing errors. I’ve never understood why this practice isn’t done everywhere.
Sounds like they went back and allowed the people with neccesary Wins/points to break so that’s a good thing. But why do some tournaments continue to hold the tab to the standard of perfection (which is essentially what is done when coaches don’t have the ability to check results)?

Sam,
You are far too practical for the rest of us. Releasing the ballots so coaches can cross check results and coach their kids during the tournament (especially when there’s no oral criticism): pish-paw!

Congrats to Josh and Thurm for their win and Bids, and to Bowyer on octs.
I would like to reinforce what Jon was saying, Tab as well as the Monticello team handled the tab error extremely well. Though stopping some rounds was unfortunate, it would have been ever more devastating to allow kids who deserved to clear to not break (including one of the eventual champions). As such, thanks to the Monticello team for running one of the most efficient tournaments of the year (as always).

Yeah, to repeat, you guys need to keep in mind that this was a TWO DAY tournament, that broke to DOUBLE OCTAS…and it finished before 10 pm. That’s really impressive.
Plus, it shifted from an original 5 to 6 rounds…not to mention an extremely efficient execution in handling errors, IE the unfortunate recall of the double octas round.
I enjoyed the tournament overall. Hope to see you all next year!

Nice job to Bobby on the ghost, Dunay on the octas performance, Silver on being a mensch, and Cruz for being the first person other than my bubbe and Friedrich Nietzsche that I’ve heard use the term mensch. Also, congrats to Karlyn, who doubles were not kind to.
P.S. Aaron Zisook is the best judge in the country. In rounds that he judges, the competitors should both lose and he should win.

For our part, Potomac would like to thank the Monticello folks for what was, again, a great tournament. As Ben points out above, this was a two-day tournament with 6 prelims that broke to double-octas and was over by 10pm. (Since we were done after quarters, by 10, we were on the Jersey turnpike to see if they had an all-points-bulletin out on me for the toll I missed on the way up from Virginia…. I’m still a fugitive.)
All this, and Monticello had the guts to acknowledge their own mistake in calculating elims and fix it asap. Everyone in this world screws up from time to time; what sets the best apart from the rest is what you do about it when it happens.
Special thanks to Sabrina, uber-tabman Minnick, and to Matt Thomas, who has to be the hardest working guy I’ve ever seen who gets it done and keeps his composure. And thanks to Coach Cruz, father of us all, for the kind words. Onward to the Bronx Rodeo and Brain-Fry!
