    Wow, Monticello was the crap shoot of all tournaments.
    First of all, they tried to push rounds down our throats. (LD)
    And second, the biggest problem: the huge tab error, which I believe was some niskayuna kid and Scarsdale’s Eric Thurm. Rumor says thurm beat nisky in that round with low speaks, and tab misconstrued this as his loss. This fucked the nisky kid over, because he had to hit a 4-1, because supposedly he was 4-1 as well….
    Instead he dropped in that round and was “4-2″. So instead of potentially winning round 6, he dropped and cleared with 4-2 high speaks.
    Of course, this screwed up the pairings in round 6 and pairings and judges were incorrect, and in the middle of the double’s outround they called everyone to the cafeteria to post the “real” outrounds.

    No offense to scarsdale, but had it been some kid from some small school like potomac, this would have not occured at all, and everything would be “fine”.

    The tab error fucked over round 6 people, and 3-2 kids could have cleared.

    I feel bad for the kids that had already run the ac, and then returned to have found out that they had to debate the same person again. Also, it must feel horrible to be in an outround and then find you didn’t actually clear… i’m sorry if any was a victim of this. (probably the niskayuna kid)

    Ok, i think the niskayuna kid was either dharia or archith? correct me someone?

    Congrats to Ali and Thurm on getting their bids….both well deserved! Also congrats to Karlyn, Akshay, Tess, Seth, Dunay all for clearing! But most importantly I have to thank the entire staff from Monti because you guys did a great job running an entire tourney in such a tight schedule….thanks to matt thomas; i saw him running around the whole time and also a thanks to Dan and the cook family for the wonderful housing!! Next time I would just recomend making it known that everyone is permitted to watch outrounds, i sort of think outrounds are the most educational opportunity debaters get….especially the ones who do not have coaching or a large school because outrounds allows debaters to learn from obviously the tournaments best? But overall great tournament!

    Nice job Thurm + Seiden.

    I must say, the monti kids put an amazing effort into making a HUGE tournament a success, and sure it was fast paced, but that’s inevitable with a 2 day tournament.

    Re: WTF monticello

    While the tab error is unfortunate, things like this happen occasionally….. there has to be some room for forgiveness especially since the people who were tabing monticello also tab about every single other tournament in the north east and id say they generally do a good job. they are probably some of the few people that are actually qualified to tab a tournament of the size monticello and we were lucky to have them. lastly id like to point out that while i feel awful for anyone who might have been screwed by this error, this one mistake is not a reason to reject the tournament and never go back. Tab is not intrinsically linked directly with a particular tournament but even so I for one know that tab will proactively make sure that this doesn’t happen again because they had the humility to admit they made a mistake and tried to fix it rather than acting like nothing had happened.

    @ post 18

    I think you are being patently unfair in suggesting that the action to correct the bracket would only be done for a team such as mine. In fact, I didn’t even know about it as I was in the middle of the AC of the doubles round I was judging when i found out so it certainly wasn’t me putting any pressure. what happened was:

    The people who tabbed cared to do the right thing when the error was brought to light AND the Monticello staff backed them up.

    Making a claim that the tab staff and the Monticello squad only cares about the ‘big squads’ is a slap in the face to some very dedicated and wonderful people whom I am happy to call my friends. Please think about what you say and the implications of your accusations before you make such statements.

    @18

    The idea that Monticello’s tab staff only cared about or listens to “big name” schools is simply pretty ridiculous if you actually know the people who were tabbing. Also, its not like Thurm stormed into the tab room and demanded to clear. Nisky was fully upfront with the problem. A mistake was made, both parties ackowledged it, and it was rectified. Unfortunate, but stuff happens.
