Daniel Moerner Wins the Valley Mid-America Cup
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — This year’s Valley Mid-America Cup ended with the same final round pairing as last year’s edition: defending champion Ben Holguin of Edina High School faced off against repeat challenger Daniel Moerner of Los Altos High School. This time, however, the result was different: on a 3-0 decision, Daniel defeated Ben to take the title for himself. Congratulations to both debaters!
Daniel is coached by Eric Palmer and Stephen Hess; Ben is coached by Jake Gelfand.

The Valley Tournament was very well done this year, as always. The whole tournament crew bent over backwards to make the experience as positive as possible for everyone - coaches, judges, and students.Congrats to Dave on an overall great tournament and to Ernie and Scott on running the LD portion of the tournament way ahead of schedule and providing overall excellent judging.

I forgot to ask someone at the tournament, and I’m really curious, so I’ll ask here:
There is a gigantic and hideous mansion on Fuller Road right across from the entrance to Southwoods FHS, with a football field in its backyard.
Who lives there? What’s the story?
Posted from: 67.165.106.135

Congrats Moerner - they may compare you to the Post, but remember that the Post long ago foretold that you would be greater…

Congrats to Catherine on a great run through some stiff competition, and also to Michael Prideaux on going 4-2 and just missing the break as a sophomore and to Leah Shapiro for going 3-3 as a frickin’ seventh grader, more than achieving her win-one-round goal and hopefully even keeping her promise at some point before getting home on Sunday.
Also, thanks to Dave for putting on an amazing tournament as always and for putting up nine people in a house with a soon-to-be-two-year-old even at the (actualized) risk of getting said child WAY too wound up right before bedtime. Dave does a ton to make this one of the best weekends of debate anywhere in the country for everyone who shows up, and no one should miss it next year.

to jake:
The mansion is owned by the Walter family. They make their living in real estate. Despite the house being literally across the street from the high school, their daughter was still driven to school in the 9th grade. As I recall, she got her own BMW at age 13. The house has been egged several times due to its massive size and prominence.

Congratulations to Daniel and Ben on their repeat-final-round appearances.
Thanks to everyone who has complimented the tournament. All the credit for its success goes to:
- our incredible tab staff in policy, LD and PF who made everything run smooth even when there were wrinkles;
- the best coaching staff in the world (Ernie, Rob Schebel, and Steve ‘Roger Stetson Award Winner’ Renzi)
- The Valley parents who spent hours (and hours, and hours) preparing and managing the event
- The Valley students who gave up their WHOLE WEEKEND to do menial tasks to make the event possible.
I enjoyed the privilege of watching all these wonderful people work, and watching some very talented young people debate.
See you next year! (And, of course, every weekend from now until June.) :)

Sadly this fantastic tournament didn’t work out for most uchicago folks (we have a very late start date, even for the quarter system), but i hope we are back in full force next year.
