Alan Tong Wins Yale
Stuyvesant's Evan Schleifer-Katz Wins J.V. LD;
Edgemont Takes Policy, Academic Magnet Wins PF;
Bronx Science Wins Top School Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The venerable Yale Invitational drew to a close late Sunday afternoon in Linsly-Chittenden Hall as Ridge High School’s Alan Tong and Scarsdale High School’s Nikita Lalwani faced each other in the final round of Lincoln-Douglas debate. Tommy Bodeau, Pam Brown, Mira Chernick, Anjan Choudhury, and Joan Gass adjudicated, and on a 5-0 decision, awarded the Yale title to Alan. Congratulations to both finalists!
Earlier in the afternoon and just a flight of stairs up from the varsity venue, Carolyn Clendenin of the Bronx High School of Science and Evan Schleifer-Katz of Stuyvesant High School debated in the final round of junior varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate. On a 4-1 decision, Evan bested Carolyn to win the J.V. championship. Congratulations to both debaters!
Evan is coached by Julie Sheinman and Caitlin Halpern; Carolyn is coached by Jon Cruz, Douglas Jeffers, and Taarini Vohra.
Policy debate concluded with an unusual final round: a team from Edgemont — Samuel Gelb are Akshay Kini — battled against a maverick from Bronx Science, Daniel Lee. On a 2-1 decision, Edgemont defeated Bronx Science to win the tournament. Congratulations to all three debaters!
Samuel and Akshay are coached by Ben Wittwer; Daniel is coached by Kathryn Clark, David Marks, and Jon Cruz.
Yale’s varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament is a quarterfinals-level qualifier to the National Tournament of Champions. The tournament’s Public Forum debate tournament has an octafinals bid to the TOC. In the final round, Academic Magnet High School’s team of Graeme Crews and Leigha Mataosky defeated Trinity Preparatory School’s Lee Lawrence and Kira Purdon to claim the Public Forum title.
Graeme and Leigha are coached by Frank Flanigan and Chip Jurgielewicz; Lee and Kira are coached by Michael Vigars, Patrick Toomey, and Darcy Butrimas.
The Timothy Averill Grand Sweepstakes Award is awarded annually to to the top school based on overall team performance. This year’s top school was the Bronx High School of Science. Bronx Science is coached by Jon Cruz.

To Josh Seiden:
It disturbs that you found it necessary to post a second comment which was essentially the same as the first besides the addition of ‘major’. What was the point of that?
My guess is that there wasn’t one and you are just an idiot.
Josh Seiden is still the reigning champion of the universe.

swt job to Alan on the well deserved win. As someone on his team, I know that he works ridiculously hard.
@65, I think he was 4-2 or 5-1 in prelims and he dropped a few ballots in elims
