Jake Nebel Defends His Greenhill Championship

Kinkaid Takes Policy Title
posted by Jon Cruz on September 14th, 2008

ADDISON, Tex. — Like the Greenhill Round Robin, the Greenhill Fall Classic featured a final round between a defending champion and a challenger: last year’s victor Jake Nebel of Trinity Preparatory School faced off against the Hockaday School’s Shivani Vohra. A panel of Neil Conrad, Tim Hogan, and Michelin Massey adjudicated, and as with the round robin, the defending champion emerged victorious: Jake defeated Shivani on a 3-0. Congratulations to both debaters!

While Lincoln-Douglas debate concluded on Sunday, policy debate continued onto Monday. The final round featured the team of Andrew Markoff and Regan Bozman from the Bronx High School of Science and the team of Craig Smyser and Layne Kirshon from the Kinkaid School. On a 2-1 decision — Kenda Cunningham and Chris Burk negated, while Matthew Farmer affirmed — Kinkaid defeated Bronx Science to take the tournament. Congratulations to both teams!

Craig and Layne are coached by Eric Emerson, Kyle Morris, Blake Johnson, and Claire McKinney; Andrew and Regan are coached by Kathryn Clark, David Marks, and Jon Cruz.

Results are being updated.

The first-ever repeat Greenhill champion couldn’t be a more modest man. Congratulations, Jake, on the latest feather in your cap and on a very hard-fought, well-earned victory, and a very well-deserved top speaker award as well. Your hard work is inspiring.

Congratulations as well to Shivani for an amazing run throughout the weekend. We like to think of the entire Vohra family as honorary Bronx Science members. So, from Bronx Science to you, congratulations!

Special shout out to Bronx Science’s Andrew Markoff and Regan Bozman for advancing to finals in policy debate at the Hill. A third-year team in the final round of an octas bid tournament is awesome, and there pretty much aren’t two more awesome people in the event. Great job, guys. Congratulations as well to Saboor for advancing to the bid round at his first tournament of the season!

Finally, many thanks to Aaron Timmons. Richard B. Sodikow reminded me in an e-mail this weekend that there are few folks in the debate community more passionate about our activity than AT. I didn’t really need to be reminded, though: his incredible hospitality and dedication to quality throughout the weekend was inspiring. Thanks so much for making us feel so welcome in both LD and policy at both the round robin and the tournament.

Congratulations to all for some awesome performances this weekend. It was great to see old friends and make new ones.

I was really impressed with much of the debate I saw this weekend, especially in light of the topic’s constraints on good debating. The Greenhill Fall Classic and Round Robin always feature the best and brightest in our activity.

On a separate note, I do encourage debaters to start posting to the case list wiki. I know that there’s debate about this, but I mean… if the defending TOC champ and 2x Greenhill RR winner (i.e. the kid with the biggest target on his back in all of high school LD) is on there, why aren’t you?

    Just some food for thought,

    Michelin Massey

Were his cases up before or after the TOC?

And was there a caselist made available for the Greenhill Tournament (or the RR, perhaps)?

Expos factos caselists are fun to read, but don’t really do too much after that, y’know?

props to everyone who debated felt like they did well.

just to clarify, I think Massey is saying that Chris Theis has posted outlines of his AC and NC on this topic online, not that he posted his TOC cases online (although he may have, I don’t remember).
