Emily Massey Takes Vassar
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — In the final round of the sixth annual Vassar Round Robin, Scarsdale High School’s Eric Thurm affirmed against Walt Whitman High School’s Emily Massey. On a 4-3 decision — including a 6-5 combined vote by the students! — Emily won the tournament’s title. Congratulations to both debaters!
Mira Chernick, Patrick Mahoney, Daniel Sheehan, and Taarini Vohra negated, while Abdul Beretay, Sheryl Kaczmarek, and the majority of students (6-5) affirmed. (The combined student vote counted as one ballot.)
Emily is coached by Anjan Choudhury, Tanya Choudhury, Elyse Lyons, Todd Liipfert, and Stephanie Caravias; Eric is coached by Joe Vaughan and Patrick Diehl.
A number of service awards were presented throughout the weekend to individuals who have helped the Vassar Round Robin become and remain the special event that it is. The Dolan Family of Texas, Catherine Jennings of Vassar College, Amanda Kaplan of Vassar College (and formerly of the Bronx High School of Science), and Susan Wysocki of Babycakes Cafe were honored.

Just wanted to say thank you again to Jon for hosting this event (all on his personal dime and effort) and for including our team. I was sorry I could not attend but via the glory of constant text and phone updates, I know that a great time was had. Thank you so much.
Emily and Jane, I’m really just so proud of you. You both work so hard, and I’m glad you are getting the rewards you deserve.

First, some congratulations:
* Major congrats to Emily for repping the lab!
* Thurm for a stellar performance.
* Everyone else, for great rounds & a great start on the september/october topic
Second, some thanks:
* Thanks to all of the judges for amazingly useful advice and comments
* Thanks to all of my friends for making this weekend (what I would call) the most fun-loving debate experience ever. It was great to see you all again and to be reminded that this activity is one that has brought me many friendships.
* Thank you to Cruz for organizing such an amazing round robin and enhancing the weekend’s events with wonderful hospitality and camaraderie.

First off, thanks to Cruz for running an awesome tournament. It was a really good, low pressure tournament to start off the year with, and it definitely helped shape the direction that I want to head in with this topic. The judging was great- there’s not one ballot that I can say was an “illegit” decision. Congrats to Thurm on a job well done, although he didn’t appreciate my artwork.

What a fun weekend! Huge thanks to Mr. Cruz for doing everything he does to make this tournament happen. Also, thanks to all of the judges and other people who helped out. I learned a ton this weekend; it was a completely fantastic way to start out the season. The competition was, of course, great, and all of the rounds were top-notch. I’d congratulate people, but the list would just be me retyping the entire field. Special congrats to Eric and Emily for rockin’ it!
