Where Will You Compete?
posted by Jon Cruz on August 25th, 2008
LOS ANGELES, Cali. — I ask one last time, to conclude a summer-long discussion: which tournaments — local, regional, national — do you and your team hope to attend this season? Which tournaments would you encourage others to attend? Why? Beyond the national championship titles, which tournament would you most hope to win?

I would encourage people to try to get out to Meadows, Vestavia Hills, St. James, New Orleans Jesuit, and Newman this year. St. James, Jesuit, Newman, and Vestavia are all great programs historically and on the right track to rebuilding their tournaments. Meadows and Jesuit both have great squads and both are in great cities that everyone should visit and experience at some point.

Bronx
Berkeley/Harvard
Locally, we’ll probably be at Lakeville/Bloomington Jefferson, Highland Park, Sections and Nat Quals.

ALJ hopes to be at:

Minneapple
Hen Hud
Glenbrooks
Princeton
GMU
Ridge
ALJ (9-10 Jan)
Big Lex
Columbia
Newark
Scarsdale
Harvard
Northeastern Championships
and
of course
we hope to be at several other post-season national championship type-tournies, but I won’t post them by name because I don’t want to jinx Mike, Paco, and Big Al.
Our schedule is dependent on Admin. approval, and with a new interim superintendent (our 7th in 4 years), a new principal, and probably a new VP, the latter two never having worked in a high school before, this schedule is subject to change.

Come to Yale! This years tournament promises to be our best yet. We’re assembling a top notch judging pool and the tournament consistently attracts some of the nations best competitors. Check out our website: http://yale.tabroom.com/

Everyone should make an effort to attend the University of Pennsylvania tournament and round robin. It’s the weekend of October 18-19, and we’re assembling an amazing judge pool. What’s especially cool is that all of the profits from the tournament will go to support students in need in Philadelphia!
Email me if you have any questions or want to judge. Or, check out upenn.tabroom.com.

I want to second Ernie’s invitation. Come to Valley: top-notch judging, out-of-this-world hospitality, and excellent competition. Our schedule is also very sane so you can enjoy yourselves with teammates and friends in the evening.
We will be attending (for sure):
Greenhill
Marx
Iowa Caucus
Apple Valley
Glenbrooks
Okoboji
Dowling
Blake
Omaha Westside
Emory
Stanford
Harker
We are going to try to attend Bronx, Ohio Valley, and VBT, if we can make it work with the schedule.

I’d just like to second what Ali said.
UPenn is by far one of my favorite tournaments. Everything runs on time, you’re done at a sane hour, there’s five minutes of prep, and you can order cheesesteaks from Pat’s or Geno’s.
And the judging pool is really, really good.

Our team is based in Colorado at a low ($0) budget, so traveling on the national circuit is a bit challenging for us. We’ve decided on trying a few national circuit tournaments this year. Does anyone have recommendations? (or even more helpful, warnings?) We’re considering Columbia, Stanford, and Glenbrooks.

The New York City Invitational (”Big Bronx”) features very strong national competition at a very affordable price. We provide meals for no additional cost and also provide free housing for out-of-towners. Drop me a line if you’d like to know more; alternatively, you can check out our tournament’s web site, which is now online:

I hope Fairview can join us in the fall.

We have semis bids in LD and PF, a top 6 bid in Congressional Debate, a national-caliber policy debate division, and free food!

As Devin said… the Westlake schedule is somewhat unknown. However, I will be attending:
Grapevine
Greenhill
St. Mark’s
Bronx
Hendrick Hudson (Yes Jon Cruz, I am actually going to attend.)
Glenbrooks
University of Texas
Emory
Churchill
Colleyville
Harvard
And some locals. This is assuming I don’t break down midway through from tournament overload.
As for tournaments I would encourage others to attend… why the Westlake Holiday Classic of course!
Actually, if you’re in Texas or especially the central Texas area and need another local on your schedule… we tend to have relatively good judging for a smallish local tournament. Check out the posts on VBD from last year’s tournament if you want to see (Ryan Cooper, John Lewis, Brittany Paxman, Shane O’Neal… to name a few from last year).

Change “relatively” to “very” good judging. I should properly credit those judges I listed for how awesome they are.
