Jon Cruz Announces Vassar Round Robin Field

posted by Chris Castillo on August 23rd, 2008

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Jon Cruz has announced the field of the sixth annual Vassar Round Robin. The tournament provides a forum for very talented up-and-comers in the debate community — those entering their third year in Lincoln-Douglas — to compete amongst peers in a highly educational, championship environment.

“When I founded this tournament, my goal was to recognize students with exceptional talent who were clearly rising stars in the activity: sixteen students a year who would number among the leading competitors in Lincoln-Douglas debate,” explained Jon Cruz in an e-mail this evening to the coaches of competing students. “Debaters who have attended Vassar — many initially ‘unknown’ at the time of their attendance — have gone on to win such tournaments as the Glenbrooks, St. Mark’s, Emory, Greenhill, Apple Valley, Harvard, Stanford, Bronx Science, Hendrick Hudson, Blake, Valley, Yale, Lexington, the Florida Blue Key, Newark, Manchester, Princeton, Wake Forest, the Iowa Caucus, Omaha-Westside, the Bronx Round Robin, the Lexington Round Robin, the Blake Round Robin, the NCFL, and Nationals. Vassar Round Robin participants have placed as top speaker at the TOC and have taken home countless honors at state and regional tournaments. And so many of them had their first taste of ‘national success’ at Vassar. That’s why I love this round robin!”

“I am confident that sixteen of the very best rising stars anywhere will be making the trek to Poughkeepsie this September,” he concluded.

Albuquerque Academy (NM) — Nina Wexelblatt

In 2004, Scarsdale’s Matt Shields defeated Dulles’s Douglas Jeffers in the final round; Jeffers took home top speaker honors.

In 2005, Hollis-Brookline’s Ali Huberlie defeated top speaker Lindsay Dolan of Hockaday. (Huberlie debated for Bishop Guertin at the time.)

In 2006, the Hockaday School’s Joan Gass and Lindsay Dolan closed out the final round. Joan was top speaker.

when two people from the same team make it to the final round. people from the same team are not required to debate, so they “close out” the tournament. in other words, they are co-champions.
