Register for Big Bronx!
NEW YORK, N.Y. — The thirty-eighth annual New York City Invitational at the Bronx High School of Science will take place Friday through Sunday, October 24 through 26, 2008. The tournament has flipped weekends with St. Mark’s.
Registration is now open on Joy of Tournaments.
St. Mark’s will take place on the preceding weekend.
The tournament is a TOC qualifier in Lincoln-Douglas Debate (at the quarterfinal level), Team Debate (at the semifinal level), Public Forum Debate (at the semifinal level), and, new this year, Legislative Debate (at the Top Six).
A Facebook event has been set up for the tournament; after only sixteen hours, over one hundred people indicated that they would be attending! To access the event listing, click here.

I’m not saying that Jon Cruz is demanding that I post here but even if he wasn’t:
Bronx is easily one of the most competitive tournaments in the Northeast and one of the best tournaments in the nation. Jon and Bronx Science program go out of the way to have stellar competition, judging, hospitality, and awards. As always, this will be etched deeply into Whitman’s schedule.

Big Bronx has very good food, and I am excited to eat it once again this year.

3 days with Jon Cruz?
What better way is there to spend a weekend?
Bronx is a really great tournament. Jon does a spectacular job with the judge pool, competitor hospitality, and as always, his famous awards. Always a competitive tournament and a great place to be in late October, I urge anyone with this weekend free to come to Big Bronx. And no, Jon did not tell me to write this. lol

Michael Mezzatesta is part of the machine. I have faith.
Come!
Ryan Terrell, to answer your question: because of space constraints, we can’t host all the Individual Events. But we will have a very solid Legislative Debate tournament.

I would also highly recommend going to Bronx. Great competition, great hospitality, great awards.
Although, might I suggest a partial trips round this year?

We will be clearing to sextodecimofinals, as in the past — speaker points are important!
(Our schedule prevents a triple-octafinal round, in any case. And not just because I don’t know the pretentious name I’d give it.)

My understanding is that while the tournament is taking place from Oct 24-26, the awards ceremony will be from Oct 4 through Dec 23.

what is the origin of “sextodecimo”? a quick google search only brought up references to book sizes
Posted from: 69.119.154.118
June 25th, 2008 19:22
How big is a sextodecimo-sized book???
Posted from: 69.105.108.177
June 26th, 2008 00:19
sextodecimo = sextus + decimus = 6 + 10 = 16
aka double octos, yeah? or is it bigger
Posted from: 76.111.228.213
June 26th, 2008 00:34
first off there is no actual word “sextus” lol except in the case of Roman names, in latin the word sex is used for the number 6, im also pretty sure decimus isnt an actual word either but since i dont have my latin 1 textbook in front of me i cant say for sure.

While I’ve added my own flourishes to the tournament since taking the helm at Bronx Science, “sextodecimofinals” predates me quite a bit. (The same term is also used for doubles at the Glenbrooks.)

A sextodecimo book is a book that is 15-18 cm tall.

I have never even been to New York, let alone the Bronx tournament, but I have heard nothing but good things about it, which means you should go.

From my own personal experience it was a fantastic tournament and even being in the lower bracket for most of the tournament i had 3 former national or toc champions which just shows how rich the judging field is at this tournament.
