Bronx Science Closes Out the 1988 TOC
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The 1988 Tournament of Champions concluded with the only close-out in the tournament’s history, as second seed Jonathan Koppell and fourth seed Peter Colavito, both of the Bronx High School of Science, met in finals and were declared co-champions.
In the semifinals, Koppell defeated Twin Lakes High School’s David Roy on a 5-0 decision; Marilee Dukes, Roger Solt, James J. Unger, Tim Averill, and Eric Di Michele adjudicated. Colavito defeated Regis High School’s Jim Sciutto on a 4-1 decision; Patricia A. Bailey, Walter Alan Ulrich, Rose M. Joyce, and Peter Pober made up the majority, while Julie Sheinman dissented. Congratulations to both champions!
Jonathan and Peter were coached by Richard B. Sodikow and Rob Levinson.
The complete field for the 1988 TOC is available.
Underclassmen Anoop Mishra of Homewood High School and Hester Wills of Vestavia Hills High School advanced into the elimination rounds and received auto-qualifications to the 1989 Tournament of Champions.
