VBI Begins Today!
posted by Jon Cruz on July 13th, 2008
LOS ANGELES, Cali. — Today, over two hundred Lincoln-Douglas debaters from across America will converge on Loyola Marymount University to work with the staff and with each other at Session I of the Victory Briefs Institute. VBI is the nation’s largest Lincoln-Douglas debate institute, and I look forward to providing you with daily updates and scenes from our different programs throughout the summer.

NSD also starts this Sunday, and I am totally stoked. I love debate camp — the intellectual challenge of debate in concentrated form. As a teacher, I find there’s something uniquely exciting about working with the kind of kids dedicated — or crazy — enough to commit two weeks of their summer to in-depth study of debate. It’s the most fun two weeks of the year.
Have fun, VBIers! See you in September.

Wes: Yea I do. Akrobatik who I listed above is in the Perceptionists. Mr Lif (also in the Perceptionists) is pretty amazing too. If you haven’t heard “Because They Made It That Way” or “I Phantom” you should google them or something. When I get my next paycheck I’m planning on picking up Aesop Rock’s “None Shall Pass”, and I just got a copy of the Daylight EP.
All of these should be downloaded immediately. Legally of course.

Request to VBI administration: PLEASE set up a round as soon as possible that involves at least five if not more judges to test the theorem that Wesley Craven is, in fact, the worst judge ever. Multiple iterations may be necessary but certainly welcome research for the debate community.

tim 1, wes 0 - 1:55AM Wes is sleeping, passed out in the middle of NOT reading 1 of the 14 books I have brought and read on the topic. He fell asleep to bonecrusher and me re-reading and typing the definitions and interpretations for our topic analysis lecture. Some people just cant be bonecrushers. We will all wait for Wes’s excuses until the morning (of which i expect to hear “I sat out in this round because…” among them).

Tim 2, Wes 0 - 2:37 AM I am a bit terrified by Wes sleeping considering in between his breathing he randomly mumbles words and phrases as part of the breathing pattern. A list thus far:
Oh, God
What
Why
Something that sounded like Cheese
I-Hop
quite funny though again awaiting further explanation

No… NO!

Jeremy
Negate (either coaching me or ben as to which side to flip, or squirreling in round)
Bergson ? (could have been burgers…)
He’s also laughed in his sleep, and, my all time favorite wesley mumble:

See, my question is how would Wes figure out a way to squirrel if both debaters asked for a double loss? Would he try to give a double win, would he just give one person the win, would he vote for a person from a different round, or a non-existent person, or maybe just vote for himself.
