Michael Erickson Wins the 1992 TOC

posted by Jon Cruz on July 8th, 2008

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The 1992 Tournament of Champions concluded with the only junior-junior final round in the tournament’s history. La Cueva High School’s Michael Erickson defeated Vestavia Hills High School’s Jason Baldwin on a 2-1 decision. (Minh A. Luong and Hank Archuleta made up the majority; Jane Eldredge dissented.) Congratulations!

The complete field for the 1992 TOC is also available, as are the field reports for 1993 and 1994. (As part of my ongoing project of insuring an institutional memory for Lincoln-Douglas debate, I have been carefully organizing, transcribing, and digitizing materials I have found in the Chellgren Center Debate Office at the University of Kentucky.)

Michael was coached by Carol Anderson; Jason was coached by Marilee Dukes.

This was a banner year for a junior class: in addition to closing out the final round, the class of 1993’s Josh Sheptow of South Plantation High School also took the top speaker award.

In addition to Erickson, Baldwin, and Sheptow, underclassmen Emily Chiang of Hunter College High School and Colleen Grogan of Brookwood High School advanced into the elimination rounds and received auto-qualifications to the 1995 Tournament of Champions.

The first judge listed on each panel served as the chair.

Did anyone else notice that there was only one 3-0 decision during outrounds of that year? Were split decisions much more prevalent then, than they are now?

You’ll see this as I upload more results, but ‘92 seems to be an aberration. I didn’t notice a huge discrepancy in the balance between 3-0s and 2-1s in other early years relative to more recent tournaments.

I *will* be posting Aff/Neg splits later on, since I have some of those. Interesting stuff to note.
