Your National Champion: Todd Liipfert!

posted by Jon Cruz on June 20th, 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Schools’s Todd Liipfert is the 2008 National Champion, having defeated the Hockaday School’s Joan Gass on a 6-5 decision in the final round of Lincoln Financial Group Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

Since 2003, Victory Briefs Daily has been providing the fastest and most up-to-the-minute coverage of all the events at NFL Nationals. This year, Victor Jih, the founder of Victory Briefs, provided live coverage during the Awards Program; the coverage is archived here.

Todd is coached by Jerry Crist and Gary Johnson; Joan is coached by Stacy Thomas and Tom Evnen.

(As an aside: I will be posting full, formatted results shortly. In the meantime, please enjoy the coverage from Victor below.)

LIVE COVERAGE BY VICTOR JIH

The awards have started! We began with a surprise performance by The Blues Brothers. As Jeremy Schiffberg put it, “The only thing hotter than the temperature here in Vegas was the performance of the Blues Brothers…” To which Mike Bietz added, “…in the 1980s.” Murmurs go around the room as many wonder how many in the audience actually know who the Blues Brothers are…. Two songs later, and its’ time for…

A staged video shot… or as Scott Wunn put it “the money shot.” We all got quiet for 10 seconds, and then erupted in cheers and applause as if the Duo Interp round just finished. So when you see the documentary, realize that you’re seeing a bit of Hollywood Magic in Las Vegas.

Then a bit of repartee… Scott Wunn and Tim Scheaff fake a fight as to who will emcee.. I think we all know what will happen….

The NFL Video… (Michael Shagrin and Jordan Lincenberg–you know how you complained about me making you practice? Well, you made the video… And they showed a Victory Briefs stressball… and no, we didn’t pay for any product placement….)

No results yet…. we’re just enjoying the entertainment…. In case you’re wondering, I (Victor Jih) and temporarily taking over for Jon Cruz (because he has no internet). This is a good time to thank Jon Cruz and team for all the work they’ve done this tournament and throughout the year providing coverage. I am no Jon Cruz, and won’t try to be as funny as he is. I am joined by my able colleagues, Mike Bietz to my right, and Jeremy Schiffberg to my left, and Jennie Savage to his left… we’re still watching the video…. they’re repeating some pictures… [The intellectual property lawyer in me wonders if they got clearance rights for the music they’re using…. It’s very professionally done and ESPN-like, so if you decided to skip awards, you’ve missed it…] OMG–there was a cameo appearance by a celebrity (Michael Uri???) that we didn’t know…

….Scott Wunn is speaking… and he introduces The President (not Bush, but Billy Tate).

By the way… this was literally an AWESOME Nationals. I vote for having Nationals in Vegas all the time, so I can stay at the Luxor hotel… Seriously, thanks to UNLV, the City, the district committee, the host committee, the parents, the teachers, the students, the school district, etc. for an awesome time. This was the first time where the host committee really got the community involved and included non-debate community leaders on the committee. It was a great idea, and it was obvious that the entire Vegas community was behind the tournament. Thank you’s to the various principals and the UNLV administration are being given…

And a word from our sponsor (us): ** Order Victory Briefs materials now, and bill your school later? We can process your orders over the summer and bill your school in the fall. We have materials for Extemp, LD and Policy Debate. You can download our order form at: http://www.victorybriefs.com/ordering.html **

AWKWARD MOMENT 1: The UNLV person thanks Scott Wunn, the President of the NFL, when Billy Tate is the President. [Polite Applause]

Hey Wes! It’s nice to see someone is following the coverage and is commenting. Jeremy says: “I miss you. I know that you were really looking forward to the Blues Brothers performance. I’m sorry you missed it…” [Meanwhile: Jon Cruz is playing with his phone, because he doesn’t know what to do with himself since he can’t blog…]

By the way–Wes is probably the greatest “dissenter” in the history of debate. We hear he was the bottom of a 4-1 in the semifinal round 15 yesterday… brings back memories of TOC a couple of years back…

….

Now we are recognizing the people who are on the various committees that allow the tournament to proceed… There are way too many names… but they are all important.

….

Last but not least, tournament host executive committee…. welcoming to the stage… standing ovation (even Jon Cruz is standing for this one) for Karen Vaughan, Scott Ginger, Ted Belch, Julie Gilday-Schaffer, Karen Durkin, and Hugh Anderson… Karen and Scott were the co-hosts, and got a special trip from the NFL… Thanks again!

Now we’re thanking the tab staff… Bietz says “that list is too long, we’re not typing that.” But the chairs are… Cathy Wodd (speech co-chair), James E. Masters (speech co-chair), Dave Huston (policy chair), Pauline Ciarochi (LD chair), Kent Hyer (public forum chair), James Rye (extemp commentary chair), Michael Starks (supplemental/cons. co-chair), and Fred Vogt (supplemental/cons. co-chair). I would like to separately thank Mike Bietz for being the Victory Briefs chair and Jon Cruz for being the VBD coverage chair.

And now the Lincoln Financial executive sponsor… who is going to spend 5-7 minutes talking to the group about “leadership.”…. and lo and behold, Abraham Lincoln just stood up…

During that five to seven minutes… another word from our sponsor: ** Southern California’s largest, most prestigious, and nationally attended Lincoln-Douglas debate tournament is now expanding to include NFL Individual Events, Expository, Original Prose & Poetry, and Public Forum. The tournament is sponsored by The Law School at UCLA and is going to be held January 3-5, 2009! Email Tournament Director Mike Bietz (bietz@victorybriefs.com) for information. **

The executive leadership talk continues.. now with music as hundreds of people are told to close their eyes and to think of the very first time that you thought of public speaking, joining the debate club, introducing yourself to the teacher for the first time… [snickers]… think of the feelings you felt at that moment in your time… how did you honestly feel.. how did you feel the first time you ever spoke [music from Field of Dreams in the background]… and parents, how did you feel the first time your child–your little child–was up on stage.. were you horrified that they would fail, that they would fall… [music fades]… how about all of you teachers out there [music comes back up]… how did you feel… how did YOU feel… [Mike Bietz: “are we in church?” Jeremy: “I feel like something special is about to happen]… And let’s take a few steps forward… you start to get pretty good at this… [Chris Castillo: “Hold me.”] Do you remember that feeling of empowerment? …. And now let’s fast forward again.. it’s all fun and games in the beginning… by a show of hands, with your hands closed, how many of you did much more research than you ever imagined you would.. [Shagrin and Jordan do not raise their hands]… keep your eyes closed, raise your hands up… take this moment… you have become truly amazing.. your vocabulary has increased… [Fred Robertson is enraptured.. three rows in front of us]… think of yourself in front of your mirror, in front of your dog… we’ve worked so hard…pretty impressive what you’ve done… you begin your competition at the regionals, sectionals, local tournaments… you’ve come up against some really outstanding competition.. [music swells]… it was truly amazing… you raised your level of play… keep your eyes closed… you rise to the challenge, you step up.. you make it to this unbelievable place called the National tournament in Las Vegas NV… give yourselves a hand [applause]…. [MB: “This is like the end of Braveheart.”.. as the fiddle plays…] Raise your hand and give yourselves a pat on the back… we don’t do that enough as a society… Open your eyes now.. and give thanks to the people who brought you here… Give thanks… [Applause] And while we are continuing to give gratitude, think about the people who have given so much time and energy–and those are your instructors, your coaches. [Louder applause… Louder music.] As the sponsor, we’re supposed to say we’re Lincoln Financial Group, we sell stuff, we give money… But that’s not what’s important today… Things are you doing are truly remarkable and what’s important for the world. Look around the room, and this very very high peer group. I challenge you to continue to maintain that peer group for the rest of your lives. As I close this down, we’re not going to talk about our products or services, but I’m going to thank you for sharing your gift… Thank you for sharing your gifts with each of us. On behalf of Lincoln Financial Group, we wish you the very best of luck and we congratulate all of you on your tremendous success. [Loud applause.]

[Editor’s Note: Seriously… Lincoln Financial Group has done a LOT for the NFL. You can visit them at lincolnfinancial.com.]

And now the first PARTICIPANT of the year award. The NFL gives $1000 scholarship (thanks Lincoln Financial) for students who attend the awards ceremony. You have to be present to win. The first winner is Michael Dogren (Holy Ghost Prep School). He is here and wins!

And we have a special Philadelphia gift from Lincoln Financial … a football jersey from the Philadelphia Eagles (any Eagles fans out there?–some boos in the crowd) … jersey autographed by McNabb… and four tickets to a game of the students’ choice… at Lincoln Financial Field… the second participant of the year award is…. (must be present)… Benjamin Lewis, Walt Whitman High School… [yeah, he went to VBI.] Jon Cruz–”He is King Jock.”

This year’s recipient of the NFL Service Award received his first points in 1961… 50 years of service to our community, starting at Christian Brothers… hosted 2005 Nationals… a true friend of forensics, on behalf of the NFL, the 2008 NFL Alumni Lifetime Service Award to Bro. Gregory Renee Sterner… STANDING OVATION….

The 2008 Communicator of the Year is Anthony Zuiker, the creator of the hit television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Three Golden Globe nominations! Mr. Zuiker just teamed with LL Cool J for a new series “The Man.” CSI is the most watched series in the world… with 84 million viewers. In case you’re wondering, here’s more info on “The Man.” [MB: Is that Cherian Koshy on stage.. he’s like Scott Wunn’s wing man… or Vanna White.] Zuiker went to Chapparal High School.. he did The Elephant Man, Adaptation, and Greater Tuna in HI. He went to Nationals… [JC: That’s the school Ryan Hamilton went to!] He didn’t break, but had a good time, and got poison ivy… continuing the speech… [MB: “This guy is super-LA. He’s just like me.”] I watched HI and DI yesterday.. and was totally moved… [J. Savage: “Were you there? The DI and HI were TRULY phenomenal. They were great.”] Zuiker: “I didn’t break the first three years of high school. I was so horrible… But even if you don’t do that well, you’re still able to succeed… And even if you do win nationals, it doesn’t mean you will [Laughter.] It doesn’t matter if you win or lose here, you’re all champions. You’ve already won!” [Huge applause. Standing ovation.]

[Editor’s Note: We are an hour in… no results yet…] Douglas Jeffers: “Now that we’ve had a lot of people who have told us not to feel bad about losing, can we find out who won?” Jeremy Schiffberg: “That was a great speech, but it could have used some background music from Braveheart.”

Scott Wunn: “Let’s get ready to rumble….”

And now the NFL’s “secret weapon”… our awards emcee.. from West Des Moines Dowling High School, Mr. Timothy Sheaff…

The Wayne E. Brown Award… “It’s hard to qualify once. It’s hard to qualify twice. It’s a super accomplishment to qualify four times.. This year, 737 students qualified for the second time. 155 qualified for the third time. 22 qualified for the fourth time–every year they were in high school. The winners are: Stephen Elrod (Bellarmine), Sebastian Bauge (East Bakersfield), Colin Carprara (La Costa Canyon HS), Varun Rajan (Leland HS), Clark L. Xue (Mark Keppel HS), Daniel Barrera (Belen Jesuit Prep, FL), Martthew Jordan (Belen Jesuit), Abigail Rose Minor (Lincoln County, GA), Laura Manning (Glenbrook South, IL), Mariah Forbes (Buhler HS, KS), Bret A. With IDEA, we have the “guest country” program. The winners of those contests were invited to compete in the National tournament… from South Korea and Singapore!

AWKWARD MOMENT 2: The kids are invited to the stage… but aren’t here… and so the show moves on.

i think the only thing more surreal than being in dallas right now after being in vegas this morning…is an exclusive victor jih nfl awards commentary! Keep it coming, victor!

What’s Tim Sheaff wearing? Bowtie? I’m picturing it now…

I was just reading Douglas Jeffers commentary on the final round…I think we should pay him to do that all the time…though I’m feeling he was restraining himself somewhat…I’d like to see a little more editorializing from our former national champion :)

Tell Jeremy “Who are the blues brothers?”

Shameless advertising…which reminds me that Victory Briefs Session 1 and 2 are going to be totally awesome-I’m even getting a haircut!

And yes, I do now posses my first ever ‘greatest’ title in debate…And I will defend it no matter how many people you stack on that panel against me. I now search for the elusive 14-1…or the 13-2 where Babb and I sit out (either scenario would make my squirrely nature proud).

And victor, were you referring to a few years back when you were on bottom of the 5-4 final toc panel? And I was on top?

NFL removed sweepstakes at the insistence of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Guess they got jealous that the geeks had a nationals (actually a few) while the jocks don’t. That’s always always bugged me…so I’ve put the results of the last few years into Excel.

If NFL sweeps was still offered, eleven schools would have landed in the top 10 at least twice in the last four years (2004-2007). Anyone care to guess?

Todd; I was really, really impressed with your performance at this tournament and you truly deserve this honor…and I’m sorry about killing 75,000 el salvadorians.

Joan; you are one of-if not the most-classy, versatile and outstanding debater I judged this year. I am so happy for you and the daisies who have shown over and over you are to be feared AND respected. Plus you’re really nice. It’s the ultimate debate trifecta; instilling fear, earning respect and giving friendship. Congrats.

a big congrats to todd and joan. todd, i remember earlier this year when you weren’t sure if you would ever break out of dubs at a major tournament; well, you’ve certainly dispelled that myth. i was also lucky to get the chance to see your work ethic at play while prepping for the toc and was very impressed. joan, i was fortunate enough to get the chance to debate you several times before i graduated…uhh actually let’s not go into that, but the point is that your talent was apparent even then. both of you are phenomenal debaters and people and this is well deserved. congratulations as well to mr. crist, gary, ms. thomas, and tom.

finally, i’d like to congratulate evan larson of bellarmine on finishing 3rd in extemp. the general salutes you.

I wanted to congratulate Todd and Joan on making (what I believe to be) the first All-Texas LD Final Round at Nationals.

Todd, your senior year really has been an inspiration to people who believe that hard work can lead to success. We are so happy and fortunate to have you join the coaching staff at Whitman.

Joan, it has been a real honor to watch you debate over the years. You have always been someone whom our students look up to, and you truly were a really outstanding debater to watch judge. Thank you.

And of course, congratulations to the outstanding programs and coaches at Strake Jesuit and Hockaday. You all are a model of excellence to the rest of us.
