posted by Jon Cruz on May 27th, 2008

RIPON, Wis. — The National Forensic League has announced that six students from across America have been named National Student of the Year Finalists for the year 2008. The National Student of the Year Award — based on an application and letters of recommendation from coaches — acknowledges “students who exemplify the NFL Code of Honor.”

“To be considered for the National Student of the Year, each nominee must have won their District Student of the Year competition,” explains the NFL. “With over 80 districts awarding the District Student of the Year honor, NFL had an excellent and diverse pool of nominees for the National Prize.”

The following six students are this year’s finalists:

Clark Xue — East Los Angeles District (CA)
Sarah Weiner — East Kansas District (KS)
David Kozminski — Heart of America District (MO)
Meriah Forbes — West Kansas District (KS)
Noreen Kassam — New Mexico District (NM)
Kyle Akerman — Illini District (IL)

“Each finalist will go through an interview process on Sunday, June 15, conducted by a neutral panel of judges,” notes the NFL. “From there, the winner of the National Student of the Year will be announced at the National Tournament Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 20th. All finalists will receive an award; the National Student of the Year will receive an award and a scholarship.

“In accordance with its mission, the NFL is proud to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional levels of integrity, humility, respect, leadership, and service.”

I saw that Kassam kid at Emory, and blew everyone away. Hands down, the most stylish, fair, and respected Presiding Officer today.
Kassam would get my vote without much debate, or the slightest hesitation.
