Networking for College

posted by Jon Cruz on May 14th, 2008

ndt.jpgNEW YORK, N.Y. — My understanding from conversations with my own students and with debaters elsewhere is that if you’re attending college this fall, you’ve pretty much made up your mind where you’re attending by this point.

I’d like to provide one final update of “The College Connection.” This is intended as a place for celebration, but also a place for networking; indeed, if you’re coming to New York, in addition to posting here, drop me a line so we can network about judging, coaching, and so on. (There are plenty of area programs looking for assistants!)

Where are you going? What about your teammates? Where are they going?

While anyone can certainly contact me regarding Penn, anyone who is going to be in the Philadelphia area in general should definitely contact me about opportunities to give back to debate through Perspectives Debate, Inc. We are currently helping 10 Philadelphia public schools implement debate programs and have MANY other opportunities for former debaters at Penn and other area schools to give back. Working with Perspectives has, unquestionably, been the best thing I’ve done in college and I’d love to see more people join up.

So, please let me know if you’re interested or have questions: huberlie AT sas DOT upenn DOT edu.

Congrats to everyone, this is an extremely talented group of debaters… I’m very proud to have know so many of you!

I was accepted at Dartmouth, Pomona, Rice, UChicago, and UT-Austin.

Right now I’m deciding between Dartmouth and Rice.

If you’re curious about Carnegie Mellon, I’d be happy to answer questions…but it’s not much of a debater school, so If you’re wondering about the Pittsburgh area in general i’d also be happy to let you know about it-my email is linked to my name in this post

I transferred from U of Chicago to UC Berkeley, and would be happy to talk about either. I like them both a lot (my transfer was 100% because I wanted to do engineering, not because of any flaw in the UofC), and I think the perspective of having attended both has improved my understanding of each. Feel free to get in touch: ajb5@berkeley.edu

Following Shadman, Vineet, Isaac, Peter, and pretty much everyone else on this list will be hard, congratulations on getting in to incredibly selective and prestigious schools.

I got into Rice, WashU, Swarthmore, Cornell, Uchicago, and UT.

It’s honestly all up in the air, but college is very difficult to pay for, so it looks like I’ll be attending the University of Texas.

To keep this thread going, here is a link to the NY Times article that shows just how impressive debaters are. It is really a thrill to get a chance to judge you on weekends now and then.

    re: Carnegie-Mellon

Pitt is literally next door, and there is a precedent for CMU students competing as part of the Pitt team (we have one this year). So if you like debate and you’re going to CMU, you might be able to keep your career going.

patrick elyas will be attending the huntsman program at upenn.

i would coach, though the city of chicago is saturated with former debaters far more talented and interested than i.

let me know if you ever need a judging requirement fulfilled, though.
