Ask Questions for the Next Ask Cruz
posted by Jon Cruz on May 13th, 2008

NEW YORK, N.Y. — After an admittedly long hiatus, the next installment of “Ask Cruz” will be posted next week.
The next column will be TOC-themed, given the recent crowning of Chris Theis and the spirited discussions related to the videos we have uploaded thus far.
Some folks have posed questions on my last column, and during our TOC coverage, which I will be answering. But if you have more questions, ask here! And if they’re not TOC-themed, I will get to them in a future column.

who is the worst speaker to win the toc? in other words, who won but did not get a speaker award or, if no such people exist, who got the lowest speaker award among those who won
and if you want a real challenge: which regular season tournament has been the best predictor of toc success in the past 5 years? (how you do the stats is up to you, id suggest a system that assigns points for debaters who “match” at each elim level)

zhao: steph bell had 8 bids her junior year and didn’t clear.
jose: given that he went to one bid tournament on the january february topic and dropped in the bid round, i’m going to guess john mcneil. he had a very strong first semester though.

I believe post 1 has already been answered in regards to a most successful freshman (Justin Osofsky) and already asked in regards to a most successful sophomore, though not answered yet.
Post 17 was also answered in previous installments (5 from Bronx in policy, in LD it’s 3, which was accomplished by multiple schools, including Hockaday in 2007 and 2008).
So was post 24 (California, Florida, and New York each have 4).

What’s the record number of bids an LDer has accumulated throughout his/her career?
Other than Baldwin, who was the most successful debater at the TOC throughout his/her career (assume run-off = 0.5, octas = 1, quarters = 2 etc.)? How far did Michael Erickson make it his senior year?

Someone noted that in 2003, a double win arg was voted for at TOC until JW had to interfere and tell the judge to change the decision. This question has three parts. a. who was the judge of the round b. who were the debaters c. who ultimately won

I’m pretty sure the judge was Wesley Craven.
No idea about the other stuff though, so work your magic Cruz!

Awesome… I’m debate trivia.
To set the Coloradoan situation to rest, I was the first to qualify in 2006, Graham at-larged a few years before that and I think Michelin Massey said that someone from Golden once at-larged in the 90s some time.
And as long as I’m posting: has an at-large won the TOC, or if not, what’s the furthest an at-large has gone? Harder, but how often has it happened that the ultimate final-round participants met in prelims; was it the same result?

What class has had the most debaters in TOC outrounds over multiple years? I.e. the class of 2008 has had 1 in 2006, 3 in 2007, 12 in 2008, total of 16.
Same question for octas bid champs.
Has there ever been a year when all sixteen debaters in TOC outrounds were seniors?

to answer an earlier question: tom evnen and andrew garvin debated round 7 at the 2003 toc. sean mumper (i believe) judged and voted for tom, someone told me a coinflip might have been involved but knowing sean thats probably apocryphal.
