Webber was a lot of fun to be around...or observe at tournaments. Maureen Haver actually did clear, beat Noah Grabowitz in octos and lost to my teammate, Nathan Foell, in quarters, FWIW.

i shared a room one year with john gibson and mark webber had made no plans for a room so he ended up staying with us. i think this was toc 2000, because i think gibson had nick turner and i had my daughter angie debating and they both just missed breaking.
webber was trying to sleep on the floor (and he snored more than any human alive, more then even me and bietz) but couldn't hack it, so he stole the flotation device from the pool (this was at the old harley site) and tried sleeping on that, but that didn't work for him, so he took a couch from the area that was next to where you went down for breakfast but that didn't work either. we rarely slept anyway so i don't know why he was so concerned, but gibson and i were getting a little worried since webber was just crashing with us and gibson and i had our names on the room. webber i believe had james scott, a really high quality ld'er from another school in the houston area, travelling with him that year, along with his ld'er maureen havener, I believe, who was also quite good but didn't clear. But James Scott did great and ended up finishing 2nd, and i thought he won (that was a great final round, a 4-3 for seamus donovan, i think, and I sat out with dave singh and someone else, maybe cherian? or maybe cherian was still too young then) so monday night we ended up taking all our furniture out of our room and sitting outside and celebrating. eventually, we ended the night by piling all the furniture against the door of someone we knew down the hall, hoping it would collapse on that person when they opened up the door in the morning.

i really miss mark webber.

Now the IM from Tim this morning that read: "stop teasing Cruz," makes quite a bit more sense. Have I really been called out for being a tease on VBD? I guess that's a first. I'll consider satiating Jon's need for war stories and post something later but for now: Clemmons' trifecta was fantastic. His telling of the story after the latter trip was incredible. AND Bietz definitely does saw logs.

Clemmons hitting the Tri-Fecta at the Derby. Us driving around with his 12k in cash in a Minivan. Hoping us two minorities didn't get pulled over by some good 'ole boy poh-lice.

My favorite TOC war story involved something completely unrelated to debate.

It was my first TOC and I was sharing a room with Mike Bietz. Bietz was flying in/out of Cincinnati, so I had to do so as well in order to get a ride back together.

That year, Bietz was on the tab staff and had to arrive early. I got to Cincinnati and was completely taken back by the fact that there were no shuttles to Lexington, KY!

It was a sweltering and humid 85 degree day. On that day, I walked from a random part of Cincinnati to the Greyhound station for my trip to Lexington. Thankfully, I made it and Aaron Timmons was there to pick me up at the bus station (I didn't have a cell phone!) I placed about a dozen calls to various Greenhill policy debaters to get AT to hook me up.

We were at the Continental Inn that year. Dave Singh and I slept on the floor as Bietz sawed some logs. In spite of the less than ideal conditions, I had a lot of fun at that event. I witnessed some memorable debates. The most memorable event had to be that trip from Southern Ohio to Lexington.
