If you know how to get in touch with Ryan Zehner of St. Joseph’s Prep, please have him (or his coach) contact Dr Patterson’s office immediately about his judge. None is listed and this needs to be addressed ASAP.

anyone know how often the judges listed as having 0 commitment will be used? i want to know if they are worth striking.

    Ashan,

I think that the 0 round commitment means that the judge could possibly end up judging no rounds, but they actually can still be put in the pool. In other words, a 0 round commitment doesn’t necessarily mean that that judge will not judge any rounds. I think whether they do or don’t just depends on the needs of the tournament directors. Just as an example, I was told that last year Jason Baldwin actually ended up judging 4 prelims with a 0 round commitment, just to give you a clue of how the system really works.

    Hope that clarifies some things.

    15

    Ashan,

Ken is essentially correct. The 0 round commitments are from people who don’t actually have any commitment, as they are merely volunteering their time. Some were placed on the final round panel, but may judge earlier, if they are available and needed. Others are people that will just be around and may agree to hear a debate or two.

Those that are fulfilling commitments for schools will always get priority in being assigned rounds over “volunteers”. But the extra people with 0 rounds of commitment give me flexibility when judge strikes, advisory committee rankings of judge quality, and judge history (whom they’ve judged in previous rounds) make placement in later rounds (especially on Sunday) more difficult.

Thus, as far as weighing the need to strike a 0 round person vs a 2 rd person, for example, it is a question of probability. I can say that the person with a 2 rd commitment is more likely to be used in any particular debate than a 0 rd person, but I couldn’t put a number on the actual probability, since a host of factors go into consideration when placing judges.

    16

Then my question is, ought 0 round commitment people use a strike? If i want to strike say, X and she judges 0 rounds, then I’ve wasted a strike. Obviously it would be a waste to strike 0 committed people because of the low probability, but why should debaters be penalized because there are extra judges around who could randomly be inserted into rounds?

Greg, I think you’re copping out. Suck it up and do the math!

Ashan P (Coach): I think the bottom line is how risk-tolerant or risk-averse you are. The zero-commitment folks (including myself) would undoubtedly only be used in late prelim rounds, to fill in for missed ballots if there are any, or similar scenarios. This means that if there’s someone you think the committee would rate highly (A or B) and you don’t think you could win a high-powered debate in front of them, you should strike them.

Bietz: It’s simple. It happens when you commit a foul inside the 16 meter box.

Wes Craven, I need your judge rankings. I have sent emails all week. Did you get them? Please, please, please. If anyone can help me contact Wes, maybe via phone or text, I would appreciate it.

before the wise cracks start, i’ve already emailed him…and no, i don’t think greg’s currently a member of the facebook group dedicated to this ‘phenomenon’.

Though Mr. Malis has now found a way to continue his streak of calling out my flakiness/ignorance on vbd right before toc (last year it was a geographical revelation regarding the ohio river). Like any outstanding tournament director, he is capable of instilling the fear of god in me if i dare to slow down his tournament…My hat is off to you mr. malis…ballots will be returned on time!
